The fund was formed in 1924. The sole object of the fund is: "To help necessitous persons who are or have been members of the Institute of Physics (whether subscribers or not), their wives, and children or widows or dependent relatives, or in exceptional cases, to help Physicists or the dependents who are not or have never been members of the Institute".

Objects: The Primary Aim Of The Charity Is To Provide Eligible Individuals And Such Other Persons As The Trustees May Determine From Time To Time Who Are Facing Serious Financial Hardship Or Other Critical Need With Assistance Designed To Alleviate The Causes Of Their Adversity
