Activities

'It carries out activities or services itself'

'the advancement of citizenship or community development','the advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science'

We exist to promote, preserve and protect the heritage and history of Newhaven founded in 1504 by James IV of Scotland to build the largest warship of its day, The Great Michael. Subsequent to his death on the Field of Flodden, Newhaven lapsed into being a fishing village but has many key features throughout its history which we feel makes the village unique, The lessons to be gleaned exemplify how it supported and sustained their community through good times and bad. In the 60s and 70s, the then Edinburgh Corporation forcibly decanted the villagers, demolished the shops and housing to rebuild modern homes but only allowed a certain percentage of original residents to return thereby destroying an effective self-supporting and caring community, Newhaven Heritage feels that by educating the young people and new incomers about where they live should provide valuable lessons to be learned..

Objectives: Its purpose is to further the advancement of the arts, heritage, culture, citizenship and. community development by promoting and supporting the establishment and maintenance of a comprehensive Heritage Centre for the village and environs of Newhaven.
