Trustees Annual Report for the year ending 30th November 2024

Starting 2024, as a group we had noted that two ground floor flats at 4 Pier Place had been vacant for some time, and felt that they would make an ideal base from which Newhaven Heritage could act to fulfil its mission to preserve, protect and promote Newhaven’s history and heritage. We were pleased to be given permission by the city’s councillors to pursue the Community Asset Transfer for Flats 1 and 2, subject to a change of use agreement from Edinburgh City Council's Planning Dept. We submitted our planning application for change of use for the two flats in 4 Pier Place with the support of the two neighbouring properties, but this was denied on spurious and poorly-considered grounds in May 2024. The rejection of the planning application rested upon the out-of-date Local Development Plan written in 2013, that is currently under revision. As such, it did not take into consideration the change in circumstances arising from the arrival of both the cruise ships and the tramline, making Newhaven an ideal pressure valve from the “Golden Triangle” of Edinburgh’s city centre (the Castle + Royal Mile + Princes Street). Our appeal is still on the table and we continue to seek the Council’s agreement, given the evident support of both the councillors and the community.

As a related matter, Newhaven Heritage took time to draw the attention of Edinburgh Trams to the lack of signage directing their passengers to the harbour at the tram terminus in the Spring of 2024 — a deficiency which remains unaddressed a year later. Our charity joined the Council-organised Edinburgh Local Heritage Network where we will work with other similar groups to develop and maintain partnerships between local heritage groups, as well as with Council’s Archives, Libraries, and Museums and Galleries.

A Draft Constitution was drawn up and circulated for comment amongst committee members, the draft of this being agreed in principle in May 2024. Significantly, it varies from previous versions in defining how we handle subscriptions and donations, something we have never needed to address before. There is still provision for free membership as a 'Friend' but we cannot avoid the necessary establishment costs should we acquire the Pier Place premises. This draft constitution was then put in the hands of a legal adviser for scrutiny, prior to its implementation in year 2025/26.

Local resident Emma Kemp took on the role of leader of the Community Gardens Group. With Emma at the helm, we were pleased to be awarded £900 by the Asda Foundation towards work within the Public Gardens spaces,

During 2024, an initial approach from Newhaven Coastal Rowers was made regarding the launch of two new skiffs sometime in 2025 and creating a proposed marine festival at the harbour. This would include an exhibition about Newhaven's history. We offered the use of our significant exhibition which we had on display in Ocean Terminal since May 2023. We were also able to provide further help and advice using our experience from a similar maritime festival in 1998.
