Charity registration number: 1195060

Objectives, Activities, Achievements and Performance

Summary of the
purposes of the charity
as set out in its
governing document
The aims of the charity (Zaytuna) as set out in the governing body are:
(a) To provide social space or facilities for the elderly to combat loneliness,
mainly those of Somali ethnicity and those in need residing in Birmingham and
surrounding areas.
(b) To provide young people, especially females of Somali ethnicity living in
Birmingham and surrounding areas, advice, assistance, and programmes of
physical, educational, and other activities as a means of:
· Advancing their life skills to participate in society as independent, mature, and
responsible individuals.
· Promoting good citizenship.
· Accessing avenues to discuss issues about higher education and networking
skills.
· Combatting unemployment by supporting young people in developing their
entrepreneurship and enterprising skills and apprenticeships in becoming
financially independent.
· Accessing recreational and leisure time activities.
(c) To advance the religion of Islam for the benefit of the public through raising
awareness and understanding of the Islamic faith.
(d) To provide relief of poverty or financial hardship, particularly orphans
anywhere in the world, in particular Mogadishu, Somalia, by providing or
assisting in the provision of education, training, healthcare projects and all the
necessary support designed to enable individuals, to generate a sustainable
income and be self-sufficient.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to
those purposes for the
public benefit, in
particular, the activities,
projects or services
identified in the
accounts.
(Including a summary
of the main
achievements of the
charity, identifying the
difference the charity’s
work has made to the
circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any
wider benefits to
society as a whole.)
During the year under review, we offered a range of services and activities.
These are examples for each category established in our aims:
(a) Chat and share session: This year, an activity we held for the elderly was
various online sessions. The elders who join us enjoy discussing their life
experiences, and these sessions help them meet new friends. Additionally,
many struggle with reading, and these sessions were opportunities for them to
gain reading skills.
(b) Educational and training: We provide online education and training sessions
for young people and adults, as the content proved beneficial for all. We had
external speakers come in and give advice on different opportunities.
(c) Arabic Language Classes: We organised many Arabic learning classes for
students of all levels.
(d) Hardship relief: The charity funds an orphanage in Mogadishu, Somalia.
This provides a chance for impoverished orphans to progress in education and
health.
