Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 The Foundation prepared proposals and
applied for grant funding for research
projects in the following countries:
Mauritius, Senegal, Gabon, Kenya and
Rwanda. All the proposals involved
collaboration with local partners.
Funding was sought for each project and
included applications to private donors and
public organisations. The Trustees engaged
and met with representatives of the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation and UK Aid. An
application was submitted to the Earthshot
Prize.
A scientific publication was prepared by
representatives of the Foundation and the
UK National Physical Laboratory, and
Manchester and Nottingham Universities on
the use of NanoSIMs microscopy to
examine_in planta_nitrogen fixation. The
results demonstrate that fixed nitrogen
derived from the nitrogen-fixing bacteria
_Gluconacetobacter diazotropicus_colonised
maize, preferentially targeting leaf
chloroplasts. This is a significant
achievement and a global scientific first.
