The GSCO was founded in 1963 to provide an opportunity for older people to play music together and to provide entertainment for community groups of the elderly, based on the recognition that involvement in live music is beneficial to mental health and wellbeing. It has maintained this focus throughout its existence and in 2025 became a registered charity. It plays mainly light classical music as well as music from shows and films and arrangements of popular music. Rehearsals are open to the public. Up to a dozen free performances are given each year by invitation to community groups of senior citizens.

Objectives: The objects of the G.S.C.O are: To encourage musicians to develop their involvement in music and playing skills in a social and supportive environment by: • organising rehearsals in orchestral and instrumental sections. • organising performances, including free community concerts. • arranging coaching in sectional rehearsals where possible. 2.2. The G.S.C.O. aims to perform a number of public concerts each year. 2.2 The charitable purposes are: • The advancement of musical education through participation in music and the public performance of music • To encourage social integration among older people To entertain community groups • To engage in other charitable activities aligned to and corresponding with the above aims and objectives.
