Objectives and activities

In 2023, a community-wide consultation stimulated an Action Plan encompassing the needs and wishes of local inhabitants. Thus, the Stracathro & Inchbare SCIO was established in 2024 to implement these findings.

These desired changes fall naturally into three themes: Community and Recreation, Environment and Heritage, and Access to Services. In total, ten key Actions have been created to fulfil these needs and wishes.

As a base for activities, there is a need to replace the existing Stracathro Hall with a suitable - and economically sustainable - community space.

The SCIO plan calls for many activities fulfilled by volunteers. These include a community garden, improved access to sites of local heritage, an events programme centred in the community space, and work to improve local services.

Structure, governance and management

Type of governing document

The SCIO has a constitution consistent with the Charities Act to further the Charitable Purposes of its three themes.

At this stage of development, membership is formed by its trustees only.

A General Meeting is held annually with conduct procedures laid out in the constitution.

Trustee recruitment and appointment

2024-2025 is the initial year of the SCIO, so trustees were invited by the appointing organisations to join the foundation management committee.

Nearly all trustees have a long history of guiding community activities, including management of Stracathro Hall, the 2023 Community Action Plan, and also participated in the creation of the SCIO.

4

Achievements and performance

2024-2025 saw success in acquiring the much-loved 200 year-old Stracathro Parish Kirk which would replace Stracathro Hall as a space and centre for community activities.

Donations were raised to purchase the Kirk, which completed just at the end of the year in March 2025.

Other activities include many meetings of the 6-person Trustee board to manage the establishment of the SCIO, estimation of costs for renovation works, and starting a business plan to guide future actions and needs.

With the purchase of the former kirk, the SCIO can now press on to implement its themes and actions in 2025-2026.

Future plans

Plans for the forthcoming year of 2025 - 2026 centre around renovation of the former church. This will require raising funds from relevant grant-giving bodies, and a consultant has been retained to assist both with this and with creation of a business plan.

The scope of renovation work both inside and outside the building needs to be planned and estimated. Because of its location in a site of archaeological interest, consultation with Historic Environment Scotland on proposed work is required which may affect schedules. However it is hoped to have work completed by summer 2026.

Informal events to consult with the community and provide updates on plans will be held during 2025.

Community activities will not be forgotten during this transition period, and events such as a Community Carol Service and a pub quiz are planned. A joint event with Stracathro Primary School, as a means of furthering community engagement, is currently in discussion.

Overall, 2025-2026 will be a year of planning and organisation for the Trustees, as the new SCIO starts work on its adopted themes and actions.
