Structure, governance and management

Type of governing document North Berwick Surf Life Saving Club is governed by a constitution that can be viewed publicly on our website. https://www.nbslsc.org/membership/constitution Trustee recruitment and appointment Trustees are elected annually at an annual general meeting, in line with the constitution. Excerpt below. Number of Charity Trustees 54. The maximum number of Charity Trustees is 12. 55. The minimum number of Charity Trustees is 3. Eligibility 56. A person shall not be eligible for election to the board unless they are a member of the organisation. 57. Additionally, a person will not be eligible for election to the Board if they are: 57.1 disqualified from being a Charity Trustee under the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005; or 57.2 an employee of the organisation. Election and retiral 59. At each AGM (or Emergency General Meeting called for the purpose), the members may elect any member (subject to clause 54, and providing they are not debarred under clause 57) to be a charity trustee. 60. At each AGM, all the charity trustees elected previously (and, in the case of the first AGM, those deemed to have been appointed by the members under clause 58) shall retire from office – but shall then immediately be eligible for re election. 61. A charity trustee retiring at an AGM will be deemed to have been re elected unless: 61.1 They advise the board prior to the conclusion of the AGM that they do not wish to be re-appointed as a charity trustee; or 61.2 Another member wishes to be considered for the position; in which case the position will be decided by a majority vote of the members present at that meeting.

The constitution lays out the following; Purposes 4. The objects for which the NBSLSC is established is to save lives and prevent drowning and to provide education and training in all areas relating to life saving, rescue and resuscitation for the benefit of the public in East Lothian by: 4.1 The promotion and provision of Surf Lifesaving qualifications and training in water safety, rescue, life saving, coaching, resuscitation and first aid for members; 4.2 The promotion and organisation of lifesaving and rescue, beach and pool training, water sports and lifesaving activities for training, recreation and enjoyment that encourage fitness, teamwork, responsibility, and excellence in pursuit of these objects; 4.3 The promotion of and the provision of voluntary lifesaving and rescue services to the community and public at large; 4.4 The provision of lifesaving safety awareness and prevention of drowning information; 4.5 The promotion of the SCIO and its activities within the local community;

North Berwick Surf Life Saving Club (NBSLSC) has run Surf Life Saving Great Britain (governing body of Surf Life Saving sport) accredited courses via affiliation, delivering qualifications and awards to members, and to members of other local surf life saving clubs, sports clubs and organisations. NBSLSC has also continued to build community relations with other organisations that align with the above charitable purposes whilst accruing knowledge laying the ground work for farther reaching activities to be developed in future years.

Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period

North Berwick Surf Life Saving Club (NBSLSC) was established as an SCIO in Jan 2024 to save lives and prevent drowning and to provide education and training in all areas relating to life saving, rescue and resuscitation for the benefit of the public in East Lothian . Once established, NBSLSC became affiliated to Surf Life Saving Great Britain (SLSGB) and continues this affiliation into the future, meeting annual requirements. SLSGB is a nationally and internationally recognised body for surf life saving training and it is through SLSGB awards and qualifications that NBSLSC will achieve the charitable aim of the promotion and provision of Surf Lifesaving qualifications and training in water safety, rescue, life saving, coaching, resuscitation and first aid for members. In 2025 NBSLSC ran SLSGB accredited courses, including 2 Rescue Tube Swimmer awards, 1 Rescue Board Paddler award and 2, 40 hour National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualifications, reaching 16 adult participants. This will enable us to reach a wider audience as we have a base of adult volunteers. To help build the Surf Life Saving community in this part of Scotland several of those participants were from third party organisations, including Dunbar and Portobello Surf Life Saving Clubs, Edinburgh Surf Club and Chill East Lothian CIC. Strong links have been made with North Berwick Swimming Club, North Berwick Harbour Trust Ltd and the RNLI (Lifeguards and North Berwick Lifeboat) along with East Lothian Yacht Club and Beach Wheelchairs ( the promotion of the SCIO and its activities within the local community ). These relationships help us reach further into the community, and will set the ground to support the delivery of SwimSafe and other club activities in future years. Members of NBSLSC with an SLSGB Lifeguard Qualification have also continued to support Chill East Lothian CIC deliver their courses on open water swimming targeted at those experiencing anxiety or depression, providing safety cover and water safety education to over 80 participants , and North Berwick Swimming Club with an annual open water swim and beach safety session to 20 young swimmers. (The provision of lifesaving safety awareness and prevention of drowning information) NBSLSC was also involved in the delivery of a CPR awareness session to over 250 members of the public . ( The promotion of and the provision of voluntary lifesaving and rescue services to the community and public at large ). NBSLSC’s charitable objectives are in italics.

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves Details of any deficit Donated facilities and services (if any)	North Berwick Surf Life Saving Club plans to build and hold a small level of reserves to cover any ongoing costs that are not met by grant or membership income. Reserves will be built from membership and other surplus income and may be established from unrestricted and unallocated grant income. At this stage in the development of the charity, NBSLSC aims to maintain reserves of £500. The level of reserves will be reviewed and adjusted from time to time as seen as appropriate by the Trustees
