The Society is set up to promote public interest in, and engagement with, current research on the history of the West Highlands and Islands, extending to other parts of the Scottish Gàidhealtachd. It does this principally by means of publication of the thrice-yearly West Highlands Notes and Queries (60 pages per issue) and the holding of monthly online lectures. occasionally other events are held, such as conferences, and these may lead to stand-alone publications. Thus it is currently hoped to publish the proceedings of a conference on the Highlands and Islands in the Sixteenth Century, held in Inverness in July 2024.
