Achievements and Performance
-
Spittalfiled (now Alastair’s Wood). Sadly, the founder of TWP passed away in September 2023. In remembrance of his vision and enthusiasm, the landowners and TWP have agreed to rename this first venture of TWP in his memory. During the financial period in question, the charity maintained the community woodland planted in Spittalfield during 2022-23. There are around 550 trees, and ongoing replanting of failing trees continues. In this reporting period TWP members undertook 2 replanting sessions - 30 trees were replaced, new tree guards were fitted and old guards removed, grass in the tubes was cleared and a number of trees that were leaning over were re-staked.
-
Protracted negotiations continued with a view to TWP assuming the lease on a community wood in Coupar Angus. Unfortunately, an agreement was unable to be reached with PKC and we have had to withdraw from this project. The lease that we were being offered put TWP at too much financial risk and it was unanimously decided that it was unwise to proceed.
-
TWP have entered into an agreement with a local landowner in Pitlochry to manage a small piece of land for the purpose of establishing a tree nursery, to provide trees for our other projects. The landowner has been keen to plant trees on the remaining land and TWP have been able to help with this. In collaboration with The Royal Botanical gardens in Edinburgh planted 30 heritage trees along with approximately 200 from Carbon Footprint Ltd. In addition, sporadic plantings of hedging and replacements have taken place bringing the total number of planted trees to about 300. It is beginning to look like a woodland! The Tradecoaters Field Tree Nursery Project saw its first infrastructure built in 2025, thanks to the successful efforts of the TWP team, who constructed two essential sheds: a metal one for tool storage and a larger, multipurpose wooden one. The wooden shed is notably large enough to fit ten people and will function as a multipurpose workspace. The construction was facilitated by the Nature Restoration Fund, which required the TWP members,
to initially front £4000 each for the build before being reimbursed in the following financial year, a process that went smoothly. went on to donate £1500 and £1000
respectively after being reimbursed for the loan and their time building the shed. Simultaneously, the team has invested considerable time in understanding the requirements for a mains water connection to ensure water security. Although this was initially planned as a separate TWP project, the landowner has recently decided to install a mains supply for her adjacent properties, meaning the nursery is now awaiting the next stages of that wider installation to fall into place, with the tentative plan being that the tree nursery will achieve its secure water supply in due course.
- Black Spout woods is a local project that is adjacent to Tradecoaters Field. It is approximately 130-acre public asset managed by Perth & Kinross Council (PKC). PKC have given TWP permission to develop its species and age diversity. The site is dominated by century old Oaks with some large 200+ year old Scots Pine. Aspen, Rowan, Willows, Holly, Hazel, Alder and other natives present. The wood is mostly oak which is all of a similar age, and so last year approximately 200 trees were planting within in its many acres with the aim, being to

-
improving age diversity. This year, 2025, has seen another round of planting, with more than 200 trees, donated by The Woodland Trust, already planted.
-
TWP members joined forces with local volunteers from groups such as the Climate Cafe to plant 10 fruit trees in the Delta Park in Pitlochry. The park is near the part of town with the greatest population density and this project aims to provide free fruit to anyone who wants it, to take some pressure off the food bank, to show children how fruit grows, to encourage people to enjoy spending more time outdoors and to provide food which does not involve plastic packaging or ‘food miles’. 10 more fruit trees will be added this autumn to provide a greater variety of fruit. Perth and Kinross Council now mow some areas of the Delta Park only once a year and have agreed that volunteers can plant a selection of trees and shrubs in these parts of the park. These will be provided by TWP and include oak, holly, hawthorn, blackthorn and rowan. TWP will monitor growth and replant when required.
-
The charity has runa programme of events through the year including a workshop on grafting, public talk on community woodlands and guided walks around local woods. The aim is to encourage interest in trees and an appreciation of the value of woodland areas in reversing the general decline in wildlife.
In the 2024 AGM held in August, a new Treasurer was appointed, in Unfortunately, has had to stand down as chairman due to ill health and at an EGM in March 2025, was appointed temporary chairman.
TWP received a very generous £61,750 fom estate, which was paid into the bank account of TWP in April 2025. This will ensure the prosperity of TWP in the years to come.
Sadly, one of our Trustees,
EE passed away on the 22 November 2025.
