As Lead Officer for Community Development and Capacity Building, Falkirk Council, I am again happy to report on the continuing good work of BWMA (Bainsford War Memorial Association). They continue to set high standards in community engagement, maintenance/enhancements of the site and continuing to raise awareness of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for future generations.
Some examples are:
-
The installation of information boards relating to c.130 soldiers.
-
They have developed the flower beds in partnership with the local schools and Falkirk Council. The schools will act as “community stewards” and maintain them.
-
They have installed an additional two benches with information plaques carrying contact details of support services for veterans
-
BWMA are in the process of publishing a book on all 226 service men and women. This will be a social history of Bainsford and a learning resource for schools. It should be complete by Remembrance Sunday.
-
QR codes will be sited on the boards that will direct them to their website that is being developed.
-
They are exploring the idea of arranging intergenerational site visits to the battlefields. This will include school children and veterans who are perhaps not in a position to arrange such visits. They are putting a fundraising strategy in place which will include a concert and raffles in local hall.
Again they held a service of remembrance marking for the Battle of the Somme . A few members met and raised a Somme flag and blew the whistle at 7:30am the same time as the Somme assault began. The pictures were posted on social media.
A service to remember Anzac day was held it was a simple service, raising a flag at the same time as Anzac Day begins in NZ and Australia. And a wreath was laid. The Australian Embassy was informed and were delighted.
The association installed a bench to remember who was one of the first members of the association, he passed away in December 2022. The bench was unveiled by Provost and The family were deeply moved.
A quadryptch that contained all of the soldiers contained in the information boards in the park was presented to Brigadier Bench Wrench who was at the opening ceremony in June 2022.
The association built a commemorative cairn into which timecapsules filled by the five local schools were placed. To be opened in 2050.
BMWA are seen as more than a “good neighbour” within Dawson Park but a provider of a prized asset. They are further enhancing their role as a partner by working with Friends of Dawson Park and other community groups to explore a community asset transfer of a building for community use. I know they are intending to wind up the group this year and hand remembrance over to the ever expanding group of Friends of Dawson Park.
I shall finish by thanking them for their diligence and hard work of the five years and having achieved such a lot within the community. The memorial is an asset for all. I am confident their good works in this disadvantaged community will be recognised and rewarded for years to come.
