Summary of the main achievements of _ River Cree District Salmon Fishery Board again requested us to manage its
the charity during the financial period salmon stocking programme. A few of the 182,000 salmon fry from the 2023-
2024 programme had been stocked out prior to the end of May 2024 but the
bulk were stocked into various nursery burns of the Cree catchment from Jun:
to October 2024. This included some 21,000 fin-clipped salmon fry stocked as
autumn fry into the upper Penkiln Burn and into the Cree.
In the autumn salmon broodstock was captured; some 200,000 eggs were
Stripped, fertilised and grown on as fry in the hatchery, with a view to stocking
as requested.
Electro-fishing surveys were carried out on various burns within the Cree
Catchment, both to monitor wild fish stocks and also fish stocked from the
hatchery.
We were once again able to offer work experience placements for students
from the local secondary school.

continued. Our forestry projectPreviousinplantings co-operationon thewithbanks Forestryof the andPenkiln Land ScotlandBurn were
reviewed, planting tubes removed where necessary and additional trees
| planted to replace any that had died. In addition, Sitka spruce were removed
from the banks of a tributary of the Penkiln and broadleaf trees planted in thei
place.
Measures were taken to control Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam
along the banks of the Cree.
Our primary education programme continued, with five local primary schools
participating. in November some 70 P5 pupils from the schools visited the
hatchery to learn about the life cycle of the Atlantic Salmon. They also
witnessed eggs being stripped from adult hen salmon, being fertilised with mil
from cock salmon and the fertilised eggs being laid out into trays in the
hatchery. At a second visit to the hatchery they saw the fry that had develope:
from the eggs they had seen Stripped and fertilised from adult salmon in their
visit in the autumn. Each pupil was given a bucket of salmon fry which they
Stocked into one of the local burns. They then witnessed a “kick-testing”
demonstration, collecting invertebrates from the burn. The pupils were able to
handle the insects and identify the various types living in the burns.
In the summer term of school year 2023-24 the previous cohort of primary
pupils enjoyed a session ona local trout loch where they were given the
opportunity try their hand at angling. Unusually, all 70 pupils managed to catc
a rainbow trout.
We joined the “Buglife” programme of invertebrate monitoring. Following
training by “Buglife”, we commenced invertebrate sampling via kick-testing at
locations in the catchment. Initial results showed heaithy populations of
invertebrates at all sampling sites.
| Our activities were carried out using a number of volunteers. In the course of
_ the year some forty volunteers assisted the work of the trust.
Brief statement of the Charity’s policy = We aim at all times to have cash at bank sufficient to cover normal running |
on reserves _ €xpenses for the following six months.
