Objectives and activities

Charitable purposes

The advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science through the representation, restoration and exhibition of world cinema heritage by 1) sustainably sourcing, selecting and obtaining films of world cinema for cultural representation in the UK and beyond; 2) initiating, organising and conducting film restoration projects for the purposes of repairing and preserving cinematic works of cultural importance for world heritage; 3) disseminating the films via programming in local, national and international film series, festivals, museums, national picture houses and theatres, and encouraging distribution through digital, and DVD/Blu-ray platforms.

The advancement of education by providing an educational platform for premiering films and bringing in dialogue filmmakers, industry and academia with the public through a variety of masterclasses, discursive panels, film festivals, and/or interactive events. The Liberating Cinema Film Series is designated the organisation’s major and immediate platform for showcasing the films in Higher Education Institutions.

The advancement of environmental protection or improvement through the restoration and preservation of the films by appropriating proper environmental conditions for and storage of the films respectively.

Summary of the main activities Liberating Cinema's first charitable purpose of advancing the arts, in relation to these objects heritage, culture or science is achieved through the sourcing, selection and obtaining of films and the building of an international network which will encourage high standards by nurturing talent and raising the artistic profile of national cinemas and filmmakers who lack exposure. By conducting film restoration the the charity will preserve memories through oral and recorded history projects (film is one of the best example of oral and recorded history) and after completing a restoration Liberating Cinema will conduct the collection, cataloguing and displaying of the restored films in archives and museums as a way of ensuring public access to the content.

Liberating Cinema’s second charitable purpose of advancing education is achieved through the conduction of masterclasses, workshops, symposiums, and interactive exhibition of the films. The exhibition will be accompanied by a formal introduction, which may be followed by a panel discussion, around one of the following areas: the historical, sociopolitical, cultural, geographical, aesthetic and/or archival context and significance of a film. The introductions will be given by and the panels will involve professionals with significant research, archival, industry and/or professional experience in their field, in order to ensure quality and accuracy of delivery when it comes to delivering education to the public. The panels will be used as a wider platform to engage experts of different fields around a shared topic. The Liberating Cinema Film Series runs at Higher Education Institutions in the UK (see Section 4.2) and it is in being based within high-profile learning environments that it aims to foster the educational development of young people, particularly those with an interest in working in the film and media industry, by enabling them to learn from the professionals in the field first-hand and by providing them the opportunity to engage with film content otherwise unavailable anywhere in the UK. Liberating Cinema will have close collaborations with archives in Europe and around the world and may provide opportunities for University students to participate in restoration projects as a way of boosting their educational and professional experience. Liberating Cinema’s third charitable purpose is achieved through the restoration of material heritage. Restoration has a direct impact on the preservation and conservation of the natural environment and the reduction of pollution and waste. Film restoration works on improving and revitalizing the physical condition of archival filmic materials by improving its stability and durability. Liberating Cinema aims to improve the physical condition of as well as storage facility for films and in that way work towards conserving the natural environment and reducing the

Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period

The charity held its sixth Annual General Meeting on 10[th] November 2025 / 13[th] February 2026. Conclusions set as goals by the board for the forthcoming year include:

Liberating Cinema championed our work in education by expanding and diversifying our accessibility and outreach: the organisation published in 2025 recorded proceedings of Masterclasses, Workshops, and The Liberating Cinema Film Series via the 1) Liberating Cinema Website, and the 2) Liberating Cinema Digital Platform YouTube and were then distributed via 3) Liberating Cinema Social Media – Facebook, Twitter or X, Instagram, and LinkedIn. This includes our very successful Restoration Lab featuring panelists (President of FIAF The International Federation of Film Archives and Senior Curator at the George Eastman Museum); (film historian, program curator, archivist and restorer, specialising in film preservation and lost films) and (film preservation project manager at the

Filmoteca de Catalunya).

In 2025 we launched The First Serbian Film Festival UK by

, organising, curating and hosting the festival across picture houses in London from 7-9 March 2025. The festival was organised in collaboration with Serbian Council of Great Britain – as part of the 18[th] edition of Serbian Month in Great Britain 2025 and playing at Finsbury Park Picturehouse and Bertha Doc House, Bloomsbury. The festival is the first of its kind in the country and pioneered education, film heritage, creative exchange between professionals and positive cultural relations. We spotlighted the very best of Serbian cinema, inviting UK audiences to discover restored classics and contemporary gems, and journey through the cultural relations between Serbia and the United Kingdom. The festival hosted landmark achievements of cinema and UK premieres of film restorations including the Great War docu-epic The Calvary of Serbia (1932/1940). Furthermore, we also hosted contemporary auteurs, bringing filmmakers like and

to London for the festival and producing open and constructive cultural dialogue. The festival boasted a range of interactive in-person events including introductions, Q&As and panels with film directors, scholars and archivists. Supporters included Serbian Council of Great Britain and Wolf Entertainment, airline sponsor Air Serbia and partnering institutions – the Yugoslav Cinematheque, Avala Film Way, Delta Video Belgrade, Aleksandrija Film, Spas, Ison Film Productions and Archangel Digital. Video-recorded proceedings of The Film Festival were published and distributed via the 1) Liberating Cinema Website, 2) Liberating Cinema Digital Platform YouTube; 3) Liberating Cinema Social Media – Facebook, Twitter or X, Instagram, and LinkedIn. The festival was an enormous success, both nationally and internationally, for the community and wider cinematic and cultural world and will continue in years to come.

In 2025 Liberating Cinema also launched the new project – “Liberating Cinema Presents” – showcasing the very best of contemporary film and hosting UK premieres and filmmakers in Edinburgh as well as Scottish and UK-wide institutions. We presented the work of Colorado-based documentary filmmaker and his film Sacred Alaska (USA, 2024) – hosted a live Q&A in Edinburgh and introduced us to key methods of his work and the film that spotlights little-known yet fundamental aspects of Native Alaskan history, culture and spirituality.

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period

Likewise we continued fostering partnerships with the Scottish charitable sector, UK non-profits and film festivals including the St Andrews Film Festival where our director curated the Film Classics programme.

In 2025 our director continued his active participation

on the international film scene and curation for world-leading museums, archives, cinematheques, festivals and cultural institutions, including the major programme - introduction and retrospective of Restored and Unseen: Three at the prestigious Eye Film Musuem in Amsterdam, Netherlands was also a Member of the Jury at the 71[st] Oberhausen International Film Festival, the oldest and most prestigious of its kind in the world. On 5 November 2025

won The Quo Vadis Trophy and Diploma for his contribution to Film Art and Culture and thus recognising Liberating Cinema internationally. His work in the field will play a significant long-term aesthetic, cultural, historic, and economic role in supporting the advancement of education and the rediscovery of cinematic heritage.

We further continued developing the work of our film journal, The Liberating Cinema Review, and expanded our institutional partnerships and work with staff from leading international archives, museums, institutes, and film production and distribution companies. All our work is carried out for educational purposes and public benefit. Our Masterclasses, Restoration Labs and Film Series are educational and free of charge, with the aim of facilitating training, public benefit, and dialogue between academia, archives, and the film industry and engaging them on a wide range of cinematic works and topics with our audiences across the UK and internationally. We continued to build bridges between people and consolidate our unique platform for audiences to interact with public figures whom they would not have a chance to otherwise meet.

trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance
with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the
Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees
consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations

Basis of independent
examiner’s statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts
Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the
charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes
consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks
explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken
do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do
not express an audit opinion on the viewgiven bythe accounts.
Independent examiner’s In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention [other than that
statement disclosed on the attached page*]
