Structure, governance, and management

Killin Music Festival is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by its constitution.

The SCIO was established on 9[th] July 2019 to replace a constituted voluntary group which was dissolved with all assets and liabilities passing to the SCIO on 9[th] July 2019.

This did not introduce any material changes to the objectives, activities, membership or governance regime of the charity, and the accounts are presented under the principles of merger accounting as one ongoing entity.

The charity trustee board may at any time appoint any person to be a trustee - by way of a resolution passed by majority vote at a board meeting. There are a maximum of eleven trustees, and a minimum of three.

The board work with members to organise various events and activities to advance our objectives.

Objectives and activities

The organisation’s purposes are the advancement of arts through the provision of an annual music festival in the village of Killin. Killin Music Festival aims to provide the community of Killin and the wider public with access to high quality arts and culture through the provision of a music festival and other cultural activity throughout the year. We also focus on the advancement of education through working with local schools to learn about traditional and contemporary music and culture.

Achievements and performance

Killin Music Fest 2023 was our second highest event ever for ticket sales, and made a significant contribution to the local economy, generating an overall net additional economic impact of approximately £194,000. This remarkable achievement not only helps drive local businesses but also helps safeguard up to three vital tourism-related jobs in the area.

We secured £15,500 of funding through Creative Scotland National Lottery Open Fund for Organisations, which focused on building our Sunday “Celtic Kin” programme of events which showcased Celtic cultures; their languages, performative arts and music from both Scotland and abroad. This support was very much appreciated and helped build upon our outstanding lineup for the 2023 festival.

St Rochs Ceilidh Band delivered a special performance and Q&A session in our local school to around 100 school children. Seeing them all up and dancing was energising for our team that were helping to organise. Some school children were very emotional after the event, telling teachers that they had never had the opportunity to experience such a session and energy.

Aberfeldy Gaelic Choir performed on our main stage, and in their down time arranged a visit to the local retirement home to meet Elizabeth McDiarmid, one of the co-founders of their choir group, which was established over 50 years ago. The choir held a special, moving performance for Elizabeth and the residents in the home before taking to the main stage later that night. Elizabeth sadly passed away in the year following the performance.

Overall funding support enabled us to present a full Sunday schedule of events designed to celebrate Celtic cultures: languages, performative arts and musi Unity Irish Dance, and Aberfeldy Gaelic Choir took us on a journey, and delivered a

memorable closing evening.

Looking forward we are planning on not running our main festival in 2024. This is partly to protect the organisation while costs are spiralling, and ticket sales are trending towards mainly purchases within the last few weeks before the event. This seems to be a dangerous trend throughout the industry. We will also use this dormant year to look at funding streams, and enhancing the logistics of the event, so that when we next run, we will be able to take that next step forward.

Financial review

The accounts for this report period are attached and form part of this report.

No remuneration was paid to any office bearer or committee member (the trustees). Trust email and web hosting services were supplied by DigDes.net at a discounted rate.

We received income from the National Lottery Open Fund for Organisations as shown in the report.

We aim to build a healthy financial reserve by optimising event budgets, to help improve our longterm financial stability.
