Held in Kay Park Bowling Club on the 1411112024 The DHHT, Kilmarnock Angling Club electrofishing team have continued to carry out surveys on the Kilmarnock Water, and River Irvine, through I pass electro-fishing, over August/October 2024 to assess the presence/absence of juvenile salmon. The numbers of surveys carried out this year were severely restricted, due exceptionally high water and adverse weather conditions throughout August and into the best part of September. The west coast experienced its wettest summer since records began. The DHTh were again successful in getting a broodstock licence for 2024/25 and hoping this year will kick start the Craufurdland Project .The North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO) making it clear that if a river does not meet its required conservation limits then appropriate action must be taken for the survival of the salmon. The hatchery has been checked over, sterilised and ready for use. We have purchased two automatic feeders for growing on progeny ready for fin clipping, prior to release into the river. We require a new main primary pump for replacement and will look at funding to purchase, approximately £600.00. Habitat restoration and maintenance work will be extensive this year and into next due mainly to fallen trees to access pools and on the Kilmarnock Water and to clear parts of the river bed of excess silt build up due to high water. Tree planting along parts of the Fenwick Water still to be looked at as a priority, to try and give as much shade and hence lower water temperatures throughout the summer months. The Craufurdland Water was surveyed on different sites which produced no salmon fry or parr. Due to unforeseen problems the new project in place for the Craufurdland Water, the DHHT has not to date managed to get off the ground but will hopefully be successful in the reintroduction of returning adult salmon to spawn in this pristine water this next year.
