Structure, Governance and Management.
The Charity is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) and was registered on 22"° September 2016. The Charity is managed by its committee.
Governance — Hawick Men’s Shed is governed by its constitution and its policies on equal opportunities, environment, financial management, data protection, trustee recruitment, trustee code of conduct, conflict of interest, health and safety and volunteering. All these have been reviewed over the year to ensure that they are still relevant and reflect any changes made necessary by legislation. An effective management board of trustees is recruited through local media advertising awareness promotions. Unfair discrimination in selection is not employed
Activities during 2024/2025
The Shed is open Monday to Friday mornings, and is quite busy with members
working on their own projects or helping with jobs that come through the door
from the local community. Some just come in for a coffee.
During this year we have:
Renovated many garden benches, tables and chairs back to ‘as new ‘
Renovated a doll’s house - rewired with new led lights, redecorated, fitted
new carpet. The annual picture hanging for the art club exhibition. Made several items for The Borders Distillery from old whisky barrel staves.
Made 10 memory boxes for Dementia group (free of charge)
The Cribbage group has some new players and is still available to anyone new
wanting to learn - on a Wednesday afternoon.
The Ladies Group in the Men’s Shed, get together on Tuesday morning for craft
activities, Wednesday morning and Wed afternoon for Knitting (and nattering) They have made knee blankets for all the care homes in Hawick, Cot blankets for the special baby unit at the BGH. We now have available several CAD machines. 3 D printer, Laser cutter and
engraver and a Scan & cut machine which can be used by anyone who has
been trained. A group meets on Tuesday evening to help each other get to
grips with this, and any member can come along and learn these new skills.
We produce items that can hopefully be sold at craft stalls.
We are now achieving a larger profile on Facebook, more enquiries and
subsequent requests for jobs to undertake coming from it. Also selling more
items via Facebook and Gumtree.
