Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects

• East Coast FM’s (ECFM) broadcasting philosophy is ‘by the community for the community’. We are a highly regarded source of entertainment and information across East Lothian and the surrounding area, promoting citizenship and community cohesion.

• We broadcast 24 hours a day with live presenters operating usually between 07:00-22:00, although on some day’s coverage lasts until midnight.

• Currently there are approximately 30 regular volunteer presenters who provide a wideranging output for varied musical audiences including popular, rock, dance, soul, classical & Latin American.

• All shows feature Community News sections highlighting events & activities available within the East Lothian & surrounding areas. These are regularly refreshed to ensure that they remain up to date and relevant.

• We actively cultivate interaction with local community groups promoting the advancement of the arts & culture in the immediate area by featuring them in on air interviews and highlighting upcoming events and activities. Particular emphasis is given to mental health & wellbeing.

• Recognising our critical role in disseminating information across the region, ECFM maintains close contacts with the local authority, community councils, charities and other societies. We regularly cascade important local announcements, especially those relating to weather alerts. Additionally, interviews are conducted with the local Police Community Liaison Officer to enable key messages to be shared with listeners.

• An initiative that has been running for over a year has seen ECFM partner with the East Lothian Climate Action Network (ELCAN), a Scottish Government sponsored body focussed on encouraging local groups to take positive action in response to the climate challenge. We have a monthly on-air interview with an ELCAN representative outlining how listeners can become actively involved in local activities.

• Daytime shows feature regular traffic & travel updates highlighting real time incidents, together with up-to-date weather forecasts or warnings.

• We foster inclusion by encouraging volunteers across generations, both in running the station and taking part in fundraising social events. There is a particular focus on involving those categorised as vulnerable. We have a number of vulnerable people involved in preparing and presenting their own shows, which serves to provide them with a sense of purpose and fulfilment, enhancing their self-esteem.

• We also concentrate on advancing the education of young people and have established good links with local schools. By providing training we have enabled pupils to take part in the making and presenting of programmes. Our weekly ‘School Bell’ show is run by local secondary school pupils, with some previous participants having progressed to careers in radio. We also take pupils on work placements, which are invariably enjoyed by those taking part, with excellent feedback received from grateful parents.
