Dwing the summer month5 we extended the opening hours to include Monday afterniM)n - this proved to be sucettsl An tern of visitor numFAs and sale5. How¢v¢r, the volunteer numbers atE down to 26. This meaT]S that for the present we shall n(rt able lo open in the aliern(x)n except on Monday. We are fortunate tn having some volunteers who undertake two or more shifts in a rnonth. The mAnag¢ment Commi are aware of the SitttiOn with low volunteer number and will endeavour to encourage rnore people to volunteer. On the weekend of 23rd and 24th AugusL the 150th anniversary celebrations were $CeSSfUl, Saturday was occupied with Ix)th a county and a town walk accompanied by appropriate dingS from John Buchan, novels - fortunately the weather was perfecL Sunday began with a st181 church service in Lyne Kirk led by the Reverend Pr(>fessor Ian Bradly. the theme was John Buchan and the vigorous putsuit of peKe. On Sunday afternoo there w&8 varied progrdmnr of events at th¢ Eastgate Theatre in Peebles. There w18 a recording of the 39 Steps stage play ond a talk by Ursula Buchan entitl The Many AsFYcts of John Buchan followeA by cake and prose0 to to&8t the 150 Ye. In the Studio at th¢ Eastgate Theatre, we had a display b&sed on thc numerous previoll8 temporary exhibitions. this small display was sury)rising]y well-re¢eived. A fTnal item for th¢ celebratiot15 look place on the 20th Novemiw at the Eastgate Theatre with a talk by Ed Jam¢8 Fe8r of Any Kind a title taken from Buchan's Greenmantle. The temporAry exhibition this year was again Huntingtower an¢ as in tbe prlouS year, successful. For 2026 we plan to look at Buchan'8 interdction with other authors including Hugh Wa]pol4 Rudyard Kipli T E Lawrence and Thomas Hardy. It is wonderfill to have th¢ loan of the First Nation Headdress. It c0nttnU lo fascinate the visitors and is pul &8set to the museurn. There have been some developments reggrding th¢ future plans for the development of the ChamE£rs Institution. Building work ts due to stth in March 2026 on Phase One which d<xs not involve the museum. Architects have been commissioned to start drawing up plans for Phase Two and the rdising of funds for this phase can begin when outline costs have been established. We have indicated that our 5tr0ng pr¢fetpn¢e is not to be part of the development of the main buslding but to remain in OUT present location so as ts) preseN¢ ow pre3¢nt autonomy. We are still continuing to have dialogues with the kottish Border5 Council over the future of the museum. Page 2
