Achievements & Performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period
In this past financial year Yell for Cancer Support SCIO has continued trading from our new premises in the former Gutcher cafe, Yell. We renewed the lease of the building to December 31st 2024, and subsequently for a further year. We joined the Charity Retail Association to gain wider knowledge of the charity sector, and to make use of the training opportunities and national advertising promotions, such as Back to School Sustainably and Good Cause Santa Clause.
The shop is still fairly well supported by both the local and wider Shetland community. However, footfall and sales have fallen in this financial year. Despite this we were able to donate £6000 to each of our chosen charities, CLAN and Macmillan Cancer Support.
We held fire awareness training for all volunteers and trustees. Some trustees also attended a webinar on marketing coaching. We engaged with Shaw Marketing to develop an advertising project to provide a more ‘corporate’ strategy, raise our public profile and hopefully bring in more customers.
We continue to promote the work of our shop through our Facebook page, as well as showcasing items for sale, and now have over 1100 loyal followers, some of whom are regular buyers.
We also produced quiz sheets to raise funds.
We recruited 1 new member, 4 volunteers, and amended procedures (following legal advice) to be able to recruit youth volunteers age 16-18 years.
We revamped the layout of the shop, with new rails and displays.
As always we are indebted to all of our volunteers, members and trustees and those who have helped in any way.
Financial review
Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
After approving the accounts, the Board makes a decision about how much we can afford to donate to our chosen charities, whilst leaving sufficient funds to cover our running costs for the next year. We regard this as a prudent and responsible way to manage the charity and the expectations of the public.

| The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act (‘the Act 2005’) and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended)(‘the 2006 regulations’). The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the 2005 Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. |
|||||||||
| My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts. |
|||||||||
| In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention; 1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: • to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Regulations, and • to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Regulations have not been met, or 2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached. |
