Grace Notes Scotland was granted charitable status, (Scottish Charity number SCO40434) on April 27, 2009.

Structure of the Charity:

Activities and achievements, 06 April 2024 — 05 April 2025

FUNDING: Throughout the year, GNS received charitable donations from the Community Interest publishing company, Grace Note Publications, mainly generated from their book sales. Donation from Scotland HUB of the University of Johannes Gutenberg, Mainz — Germany and personal

Grace Notes Scotland received several enquiries and invitations to share aspect of our previous projects and/ or mentor community groups planning their own projects.

May 7, 2024: an illustrated talk in Crieff library displaying the project conducted in Strathern during the pandemic and launching the book produced from it: ‘Up the Glen and down the village’

May 21, 2024 : Muthill, nr. Crieff Community music and songs inviting participation from local people and visitors.

May 22, 2024 : Kirkcaldy, Fife - A reunion of the participants in the oral history project organised by Grace Notes Scotland, recording retired engineers who built the machinery for coal mines and linoleum making.

June 4, 2024: Lagan community: celebrating the music and traditions of the cattle drovers of former times, and the crofting /farming community of today. Music, storytelling and songs.

June 6, 2024: Dundee : a benefit concert to raise funds to support a young boy with a rare form of muscular dystrophy: the aim to acquire improved mobility aids to make life easier for him and his mother. (Held in the premises of Dundee football social club). All proceeds from the event donated to the fund.

June 24, 2024 : Song workshop with the community choir in Comrie (Earnsong)

August 10-12, 2024 : Weekend of workshops in Music Scots and Gaelic songs, dancing, held in Muthill village Hall and the commercial hotel, Muthill

September 19-21, 2024 : Isle of Barra: Community project sponsored by local branch of the Gaelic Association and local museum: Display and mentorship on how to run a community project to collect order Tradition and other items relevant to the local way of life. Museum session opens to the entire community and school workshop.

October 4, 2024 : Illustrated talk for the local history society on GNS former project recording and photographing the bleach works at Luncarty.

October 8-9, 2024 : Conference weekend on sustainability and biodiversity held in Comrie Croft. Contribution on traditional methods of cultivation and food management as well as a workshop on the songs and stories that maintained community cohesion as well as family life and mental health.

October 27, 2024: An illustrated presentation at Birnam Book festival to present illustrations recordings made during the pandemic. The book from our project was featured in the festival programme. Up the Glen: An History of Strathearn.

November 21, 2024 : In Dunfermline, collaboration with artists and writers. Participation in the project in which we collaborated on the Perthshire folklore collector and writer Hamish Henderson. Film, discussion, and community participation.

December 1 and 12, 2024 : The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, invited to share a selection of recordings, photographs and films from Grace Notes Scotland project. Oral History, recording industrial workers of industries that had closed down: Brickwork and brick makers (published on the blog) and talk entitle “The tools of the trade from precision engineers” (now online with an international audience)

January 25, 2025: Community Burns supper in Muthill, contributions to the songs and General activities.

March 5, 2025: Glasgow Goes Green: a project for students highlighting the importance of sustainability and biodiversity with a presentation on the Folklore and songs of plants. Held Glasgow University and open to the general public.

April 26, 2025: Contribution to a benefit concert to raise funds for a community of traditional music and song festival to be held in September 2025 in Kirriemuir.

Future plans

We committed to the aims of ‘handing on traditions to new generations’ and continue to develop outreach through social media (Facebook) and Mailchimp. We continue engagement with students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and care-home residents as recent projects demonstrate the benefit to the (mostly elderly) participants and their carers.
