Charitable purposes
The purpose of the Society is to advance education through promoting
and encouraging the study of Genealogy, Family History and Local History
in the Buchan area by meetings, lectures and the production of local
publications/resources.
Summary of the main activities
in relation to these objects Currently, due to a shortage of volunteers, the Family History Centre is
open for only one day per week. However, we are able to open on any
other day where a prior arrangement has been made (i.e. to
accommodate visitors to the area).
Our aims are:
To advise and assist people in starting or continuing genealogical studies.
To procure and make available reference materials including access to
the internet and genealogy subscription sites..

Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of
the charity during the financial period		 Owing to the shortage of volunteers to man the Centre we have not been
able to open for more than one day per week. This has restricted our
achievements and performance for the year. However, the number of
visitors into the Centre has continued to increase during 2025.
We held a three-day Photographic Exhibition during Peterhead Scottish
Week 2025, centred on old school photographs, which was well attended.
Unfortunately weather conditions meant we were forced to cancel our
annual Graveyard Walk, which comprises a conducted tour of a local
cemetery where we point out the memorial inscriptions on several graves
of local historical interest with a brief account of the persons buried
therein.
For the first time since Covid, we were able to restart our open meetings,
which feature a talk on an aspect of genealogy or local heritage. At this
first meeting we hosted a presentation about the work of the
Commonwealth War Graves Commission and its educational charity, the
Commonwealth War Graves Foundation.
The Society also took part in the Scottish Council on Archives project,
Community Stories, Community Archives, attending a day long workshop
in Perth, and working on our own archives with a community archivist.

The sole use of the premises which we are occupying has been donated
to the Society by Mr & Mrs Stephen. They are permitting us to occupy the
property free of charge. This offer does not include service charges which
we need to cover ourselves.
We are still being granted 100% discounted Business Rates. We are also
exempt from paying water rates to Business Stream.

APPENDIX 1 Other optional information In 2025, the Society has been active in gathering further sources of information to add to our collecb'on. I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2025 which are set out on pages 5 to 7.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
