To save lives: trained volunteer First Responders are called by the Scottish Ambulance Service to attend patients who have called 999, to help them with emergency basic life support skills, whilst they await for an ambulance with paramedics to attend, To seek advancement of health and the advancement of education: trained volunteers provide Emergence Basic Life Support training courses for the general public to enable them to cope in an emergency. In addition we maintain 8 public access defibrillators in the Penicuik area for local people to use in the event of a cardiac arrest, whilst awaiting the ambulance and paramedics to attend.

Objectives: 4.1.1 To save lives: a) Enable our volunteer PCFRs to be dispatched by the Scottish Ambulance Service (hereafter referred to as SAS) Ambulance Control Centre (hereafter referred to as ACC), to respond to appropriate calls. b) Bridge the gap from the time when a 999 call is made in the Penicuik area, and the arrival time of an emergency ambulance response. c) Only attend calls/incidents within the Penicuik agreed area, for which they have been trained, in accordance with the current SAS procedures. d) Work within the guidelines, policies and terms of agreements set by the SAS, for volunteering PCFRs. e) Assist the SAS where necessary with the selection, training and assessment of volunteer Community First Responders (hereafter referred to as CFRs), as well as the provision of on-going training and assessments, as guided by the SAS. f) Aim to provide Penicuik with cover from PCFRs, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 4.1.2 To seek the advancement of health and the advancement of education:
