HPCLT was set up as a community charity following the purchase of 421 hectares of an over-grazed deer farm at Dùn Coillich in Highland Perthshire. The main vision was to increase biodiversity through the restoration of native woodland and other habitats. Other objectives include: to make Dùn Coillich relevant to local communities, specifically as a resource for advancing employment opportunities for local young people, to advance education and training in ecology and rural skills. and to provide opportunities for volunteering, walking and for wildlife observation. More than 230,000 native trees have been planted, ponds have been established and 12km of waymarked walking trails created. The Trust's community outreach activities are coordinated by two employees: a full-time Project Officer and a part-time Assistant Project Officer.

Objectives: 3.1 To provide benefit to communities within Highland Perthshire, the Charitable Purposes of the Trust ('the Charitable Purposes') are: 3.1.1 to advance environmental protection and improvement by the restoration of native woodland and other habitats as important means of conserving and increasing biodiversity. 3.1.2 to advance education and training in ecology, land management and rural skills by facilitating opportunities for educational establishments and other organisations. and 3.1.3 to provide and organise recreational opportunities, primarily by providing access to walking and to wildlife observation.
