The Society was founded in 1986 and operates within the former byre and dairy of Castlehill Farm. It continues to be owned by Highland Council which leased the property to the Society in 2004 for a peppercorn rent. A programme of improvements has transformed the buildings into a local heritage centre, a 4 star Visitor attraction and a centre for archaeology and fossils. The principal objective of the Society, as recorded in the Constitution, is to preserve the character, history and traditions of the village of Castletown and Parish of Olrig. The affairs of the Society are controlled by the Management Committee, all members of which are elected annually at the Annual General Meeting by the members of the Society. Castlehill Heritage Centre is operated by Society as a 4 star visitor experience and an educational facility and holds themed exhibitions and workshops throughout the year featuring the heritage and social history of the village of Castletown and Olrig Parish.
