HWS was set up to rescue, rehabilitate and release abandoned, injured and unwell marine mammals by providing facilities for their care, as well as provide information and education to the wider public.

Objectives: The objects of the HWSA will be to relieve the suffering and distress of seals, otters and other mammals and to assist other bodies to study and monitor the behaviour and population of seals, otters and other mammals in the interests of Shetland's wildlife.
