Milngavie Music Club is a recognised charity in Scotland and is an unincorporated association. The objective is to foster the love of good music by providing concerts and other musical activities consistent with the character of the club. Committee members act as Trustees of the charity and are appointed or reappointed at the AGM.

TRUSTEES’ REPORT 2024-25 Season

It is extremely heartening to report that the success enjoyed by Milngavie Music Club over recent seasons continued in 2024-25, both artistically and in audience support and financial strength. Post-pandemic recovery has not been a given for many Scottish societies such as ours. Classical music’s position in our cultural life faces many threats and public and institutional support for it cannot be taken for granted, but we believe that the committee’s hard work in pursuit of our mission to bring great music to our community is bearing fruit.

For the third year running we have maintained our high level of season ticket-holding subscribers at 170. Costs continue to rise, sometimes alarmingly, as in the case of the Performing Rights Society’s charges which tripled this year following a change in their rules. Equally, public subsidy in the shape of the grant we receive from Chamber Music Scotland is declining and will continue to fall in the next few years. Against those head winds we can set our buoyant single ticket sales and subscriptions. Together they represent a big vote of confidence in what we do. We must also pay special tribute to those individuals who donate generously to the club. With their help and our audience support we can say with confidence that our financial position is robust and healthy.

The season was especially rich in music for string quartet, with three first class ensembles – the Brodsky, Marmen and Agate quartets – delivering really superb performances. Also excellent was a young Scottish ensemble, the Lark Trio, and we much enjoyed veteran British pianist appearance in February. Including the Paris-based Quatuor Agate, the international dimension of our season was strong, with French oboist , Jordanian-Palestinian pianist , and Polish mezzo soprano . The season closed with one of the largest chamber ensembles we have ever presented – the seven members of London-based collective Chamber Music Box – in a programme headed by Beethoven’s Septet.

The Music Hub, our enthusiastic ‘community’ of amateur instrumentalists, continued to thrive with its weekly meetings at Bearsden Cross Church and special all-day events such as ‘The Joy of Sextets.’ Under its indefatigable organiser , assisted by and , the Hub is a source of great pride to the club and we were delighted that work in establishing and developing it was recognised by our local authority with a Provost’s Community Champion Award. In another area of community outreach the club sponsored a McOpera primary schools project based on the ‘Billy Goats Gruff’ story with music by . The workshops and performances led by a trio of musicians were much enjoyed by children at Milngavie Primary School and at Woodland View ASN School in Kirkintilloch.

In January we launched a newsletter which will appear three times a season and which we hope will keep our supporters informed about everything we do.

As always I want to congratulate our hard-working committee on their commitment across the season. We say goodbye to two valued committee members who are retiring. We thank for his sterling service to the club over many years and we wish him well. also leaves us after two years to study architecture at university. We thank her and wish her the very best in her future career.

Notes to the Financial Statements – year ended 31 March 2025

  1. Accounting Policies and Taxation The financial statements have been prepared under receipts and payments basis, in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006.

  2. Piano We continue to arrange storage free of charge with Bearsden Cross Church together with an agreement for their use of it. Piano Depreciation is calculated at 10% p.a., this figure is listed annually in the Payments section.

Restricted Accounts These are accounts for special projects. They are:

Grants and Sponsorship The Club received two grants, and a payment for outreach work.

Artists’ Fees, Accommodation and Travel expenses

Making Music Subscription and Insurance The Club is affiliated to Making Music to access a bank of programme notes and to take advantage of an insurance scheme to cover possible cancellation of a concert. Advice is available in all aspects of concert promotion. Also, we make payments for Performing Rights through Making Music. The subscription fee and insurance runs from January to December. Our piano is insured separately through Allianz.

Hall Rental covers concert venue and meeting hires.
