We focus on conserving our heritage – keeping the building alive through meeting the needs of the present - adapting to changed economic and social factors, working the way the blacksmiths always have! We try to: Keep the smiddy at the heart of the community by: – Keeping the smiddy working – Sharing our aims. telling our story far and wide, building partnerships – Engaging villagers in enjoying our local heritage through events – Involving local people in our volunteering opportunities Attract funding by: – Raising funds locally – Applying to external partners for project funds Restore the buildings and environment by: – Careful stewardship – Restoration and development projects – Environmental improvements to provide a resource at the heart of the village. We manage organic allotments an orchard and areas for walking/general recreation.

Objectives: The objects for which the Trust is established are: To preserve the Smiddy Building at Cousland, near Dalkeith, Midlothian and its collection for the benefit of the local community and to advance the education of the public in Scotland and elsewhere by the provision of the Smiddy Building as a museum.
