Objectives and activities

The objectives of Edinburgh University Children's Holiday Venture (CHV) remain focused on organising and delivering activities and support for children from Edinburgh's peripheral housing schemes, particularly those living in areas of economic deprivation. These children often face challenges such as neglect, bereavement, isolation, or caring responsibilities. Referrals continue to be made by social workers, schools, and other professionals who think CHV could provide support. CHV aims to create a long-term supportive framework through consistent engagement and a high volunteer-to-child ratio. This approach allows children to develop confidence, social skills, and personal growth while providing a welcome break from their home and school environments. The charity currently supports approximately 150 children across its groups in the Niddrie, Pilton and Sighthill catchment areas. These groups operate on a fortnightly basis, with volunteers providing transportation via CHV's minibuses to ensure accessibility for all participants. Throughout the 2024-2025 financial year, CHV continued in its financial recovery and growth following previous financial constraints the year prior. This progress allowed for the reinstatement of two summer residential camps and the introduction ofa new summer programme. As a result, 2024-2025 marked the first year in CHV's history where it operated for 12 consecutive months. Despite this expansion, CHV has remained committed to its core mission of ensuring that all children benefitted from structured, engaging, and supportive experiences. Overall, CHV enjoyed another successful year, laying strong foundations for continued growth and impact for the year ahead.

Achievements and performance

Children's Holiday Venture's primary aim is to support children in Niddrie, Pilton, and Sighthill, to improve their emotional and physical well-being through engaging, social, and confidence-building activities. Alongside this, the charity also works to prioritise its long-term sustainability by fundraising and securing grants to maintain and expand its services.

Following a successful period of grant funding at the end of the 2023-2024 financial year, CHV entered 2024-2025 in a stable financial position, equipped with the capacity to expand. Oneofthe first major achievements was the reinstatement of residential camps, which saw two successful weekends away held in April and June, involving 35 children. The introduction of the summer programme further expanded CHV's reach and enabled the charity to become operational for 12 months of the year for the first time in its history. A thirteenth group was subsequently added following the programme due to high demand for services in our Sighthill catchment area which meant a ten child increase to the number of beneficiaries of CHV. This was a testament to the hard work of the committee and volunteers.

Alongside service expansion, the committee remained focused on CHVs goals of financial sustainability and long term security. Grant activity and fundraising remained active, with successes including the annual ball which sold over 100 tickets - a record number for the event - alongside a ceilidh and several bake sales. The success of these events underlined the vital role fundraising plays in maintaining CHVs financial stability and supporting long term goals such as saving towards the purchase of a new minibus in the coming years. Grants equally continued to provide the security and continuity promised to service users over the course of the year. Evening activities remained at the heart of CHV's work. Throughout the year, groups took part in a wide range of engaging activities, including cookery school, bowling, trampolining, beach bonfires, the Chocolatarium, Camera Obscura, arts and crafts and swimming. Volunteers worked creatively to ensure activities were high-quality, inclusive, and developmentally beneficial. Day trips were also a priority, with the children getting the opportunity to visit places such as the Edinburgh Zoo, Time Capsule Water Park and M&D's Theme Park.

CHV ended the year in a stable financial position, reflecting the collective effort of the entire committee, volunteers, and supporters. Following our most successful year of grants in recent times, CHV was able to expand existing services and ensure continuity into the next financial year. This was demonstrated through the return of residential camps and the launch of the summer program. The commitment and resilience of CHV's volunteers were key to the charity's success this year. The committee, group leaders, and volunteers ensured that 150 children continued to receive vital support and engagement, helping them build confidence, make new friendships, and enjoy new experiences. Looking ahead, CHV remains confident in its ability to operate sustainably, supported by strong foundations, secure funding, trusted relationships, and a dedicated volunteer base.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS' REMUNERATION AND EXPENSES

The members of the committee did not receive any remuneration or reimbursement of expenses during the year (2024 - £nil).

  1. Accounting policies (continued)

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds are those which can be used within the charity's objectives, at the discretion of the members.

Restricted funds are those which can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the charity's objectives. Funds are restricted when their purpose is specified by the donor, by the terms of an appeal or where they are raised for a particular purpose or project.

Incoming resources

All income is included in the statement of financial activities when entitlement has passed to the charity, it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the charity and the amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income:

Resources expended

Resources expended are recognised in the year in which they are incurred and include attributable VAT which cannot be recovered.

Tangible assets

Tangible assets are initially recorded at cost, and subsequently stated at cost less any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Any tangible assets carried at revalued amounts are recorded at the fair value at the date of revaluation less any subsequent accumulated depreciation and subsequent accumulated impairment losses. Anrecognisedincreasegainsin theandcarryinglosses, amountunless ofit anreversesasset aascharge a resultfor ofimpairmenta revaluation, thatis recognisedhas previouslyin otherbeen recognised as expenditure within the statement of financial activities. 3. Accounting policies (continued)

Impairment of fixed assets

A review for indicators of impairment is carried out at each reporting date, with the recoverable amount being estimated where such indicators exist. Where the carrying value exceeds the recoverable amount, the asset is impaired accordingly. Prior impairments are also reviewed for possible reversal at each reporting date.

Financial instruments

A financial asset or a financial liability is recognised only when the entity becomes a party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.

Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at the amount receivable or payable including any related transaction costs, unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where it is recognised at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest for a similar debt instrument.

Current assets and current liabilities are subsequently measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be paid or received and not discounted.

Debt instruments are subsequently measured at amortised cost.
