The Shetland Folk Society organises the annual Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year competition. The competition brings together fiddlers from throughout Shetland to celebrate our musical heritage. Young fiddlers perfect and perform both traditional and contemporary Shetland fiddle music in preparation for the competition. In learning and memorising these tunes young fiddlers become part of a shared musical community and their ability to play these tunes plays an important role in preserving and passing on our musical and cultural heritage for generations to come. The public are welcome to come and go as they wish during the competition and the audience includes people of all ages. Our finale concert is a ticketed event and it is usually a sell-out performance. We are set up to financially support the annual Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year competition.

Objectives: To preserve in permanent form and publish for the public benefit as much as possible of the musical, artistic, historical and traditional heritage of Shetland and to stimulate public interest in all aspects of the traditional Shetland way of life.
