'the advancement of education','the advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science'

NESMS was founded 50 years ago to provide tuition of excellence not available in the city or region at that time. Since then, much has changed with NESMS adapting and diversifying in response to different circumstances, while maintaining the original concept of excellence in tuition. One adaptation concerns tuition of adults in helping develop their full potential as performers and local music/ instrumental teachers. One fundamental element remains unchanged, and we still arrange for many of our tutors to travel from London, Manchester, Glasgow, and elsewhere to provide tuition to the many extraordinarily talented musicians in Aberdeen and the surrounds. The aim of the Charity is specifically: • To provide a centre where people can receive advanced or other musical tuition not otherwise available to them. • To provide all the appropriate facilities to the purposes of the School. • To receive as pupils those the Council of Management considers in proper need of the School

Objectives: Subject to the said over-riding qualifications the objects for which the School is established are:- (1) To provide a centre where young people can receive tuition not otherwise available to them, in each of the musical disciplines. (2) To provide and maintain in such place or places as the Council of Management may consider proper, all facilities appropriate to the purposes of the School. (3) To receive as pupils such persons as the Council of Management may consider proper, and that on such conditions, including payment of fees for or towards their maintenance, education and treatment and for such periods, all as the Council of Management may fix. and to remove any such persons at the discretion of the Council of Management without cause assigned. (4) To establish, subsidise, promote, support and amalgamate with Companies, Institutions, Societies or Schools that are charities in the legal technical sense having objects altogether or in part similar to those of the School, provided that by their constitution they prohibit the distribution of any profits or assets among their Members. (5) To purchase, take on lease or in exchange, hire or otherwise acquire, any property, heritable or moveable, real or personal, which may be deemed necessary or convenient for any of the purposes of the School. (6) To draw, make, accept or endorse promissory notes, bills of exchange and other negotiable instruments.
