The Sonar team consists of l O volunteers, wlio pul in a lot of lime and efyon parlicularly when a %earch happens, but also thToughout the year. 2023 was a significant yeaT for the team t.or many reasons. In May 2023, we conducied a training session in collaboratlon wilh the Inishowen Sub-Aqua Club, who provided divers so that we could simulate a sonar search for a body. Many thanks to Aodhan McDaid and the Inishowen SAC crew for their 4upport. This was followed in June by a weekend'% Iraining with the Norbit support team. In July, the team were la.%kcd 10 perform a mulii-day sonar search for a missing per80n in the Foyle. The individual was eveniu(Illy found %ate and w¢ll elsewhere. In August, the team were aga?n la4ked lo search for a missing person who wa5 believed io hav¢ enicrcd the river. This was again a multi-day .%earch, and the ieam were able to elimAnat¢ several search aTcas before the individual was evcnlually IoLaicd downriv¢r. In OLI 2023 we welcoined 3 new Team members, to further .%trengihen the team. They 'ere .4oon called into a¢lion when in late OLtc)ber we perfonned <7 mulii-week search of We8ilake for a mi55ing' pcr%()n. A SARDA dog l)ad indicated Ilie person l)ad possibly enlered Ihe lake. This wa5 conducted in Creggan Country Park. lil November we also welcomed our new Sonar Coordinator Danielle Francis, who took over the rein.% from Seamu% MLCloskey. Feb 2024 saw the resumption of regular Sonar training, we conducted session5 for all members ai ba.se and in Creggan Country Park. WL unfortLEndtoly lo%1 our regular Soi)ar boat (Spirit of James), as il had to be relirLd from ihL tleet. For now, we are C4ipable of operating Sonar from the Steady, and we are exploring further options tor a replacemeni boat suitable for Sonar. In Marcli 2024 we participated in a multi-week, multi-agency ,%earch for a male who eniered the riveT ai Sirabane. This was challenging as the searLh ar¢'a Wd% huge, and the river is uncharted and hazardously shallo. in place%. We Ihereforc fo¢used on using the Garn]in Livescope to conduct a side-scan sonar search, and used the Norbit Multibeam only on .%pevific deeper arca% ol. the river. This training received very positive feedback from voluiil¢ers wlio said Ihal il gal'e them a greater understanding of these issues. TLAM LEADERS In 2024, our new T¢am Lcadership training was suc¢esstully rolled out. This Iraiiiing was desigiled 10 give a volunteer Ihe cojrect skills lo lead ieams on duly and have ihc kn()uiledLye and confjdence lo de¢il wilh hi&yhly chall¢nging' situalions. This was implernenled by cla.5sroom-ba5ed lectures covering all aspecis of Team l.eader responsibilities. We then covered all the pracliual aspec1% of duly trom arrivinbJ at baselgoing out on duty/dealiiig witli Ihe public aiid signing off al'ier duty. Myself and Gareth also became RYA PWC insirnclors which allowed us lo certify I I more volui)leers in PWC. 16 voluiiteers wlio did not have tlieir RYA powerboat level 2 certificate were also certified and there was a Vlll-' course delivered externally lo 15 voluiileers on boat. A further 2 volunleers becaine coxswains and iii 2024 mandatory Iraining was introduced again so that lime could then be diverted into upskilling all our boat volunteers. This period of time saw the mosi Iraiiiing and progressioii we have ever had within Ilie charity. There are over 40 volunteers now on Boat with over 20 qualiffted as Coxswains and 30 of which are also PWC (rdined Its fair lo say li has been a very busy year for our boat training team. The boat training team is made up of a group of highly experienced boat volunieers who bring a wide range of 4kill.s.
