Objectives
The purpose of the Friends of Altnagelvin Charity ( F.O.A ) is to provide funding for the enhancement of the hospital experience for patients and their families.
Items purchased are normally outside the categories supplied by the hospital itself. Examples include ; Hairdressing Sets, Childrens’ Play Equipment, Televisions, Crockery, Overnight Chair-beds for families staying with their patient-relative etc,etc.
Two Projects funded during the year were;

a) Dementia Aids for the Trauma Unit of Orthopaedics.

b) The refurbishment of the ICU Relative’s Room which had been repurposed during Covid.
3) Aims
The committee for the F.O.A. meet four times a year to review progress and approve activities, expenditures and the Annual Report. Attendance is 80% to 90% on each occasion.
This was suspended during Covid but returned to normal during 2022, the AGM was held in September.
Each year the committee issues an internal flyer to all clinical heads of departments/wards seeking requests for items which would enhance the patient/visitor experience. During 2022 two rounds of funding took place
No pre-selection or exclusions are applied, all departments are contacted.
Requests are collated with budget costs and presented to the full committee
In general no request is declined if it does not conflict with the following criteria;

A) Must not be an item normally supplied by the Hospital,

B) Must not contravene NHS or Hospital health and safety regulations,

C) Must benefit the public as in the patient and visitors,
-
D) Is within the prudent capabilities of the F.O.A. available funds.
4) Achievements
During the 2022 financial year the committee reviewed 16 requests for financial assistance. Of these all were approved for funding amounting to £ 44,459
This funding was deposited in the Hospital’s ‘Endowments and Gifts’ account. This enables clinical managers to access their request via the Hospital’s (NHS) ordering system. This ensures the best prices are available due to NHS bulk contracts, also all health and safety and technical issues are met.
During the year the committee organised fundraising activities helped by family and friends.

5) Financial Review
Annual Income for 2022 amounted to £28,959 showing an increase from 2021 of 53.3%. Ward funding requests amounted to £44,459.
