Objectives and Activities
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
| Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document |
Para 1.17 | The objectives of the trust are: a) to promote any charitable purposes within the former diocese of Wakefield, which are in need of spiritual or material assistance by reason of social or economic changes with a view to reinforcing the work of the Church of England among the people of that area. b) To promote and assist the charitable work of the Church Urban Fund. |
| Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts. |
Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
In planning for activity for the year the Trustees considered the impact on the wider community (for the public benefit) of the grants made. The key aim of the trust remains to support locally based projects where mission not maintenance is the mainstay of church life. During the year 37 grant applications were considered and grants (in full or in reduced amounts) were awarded to 33 applicants. The Trustees met visually on two occasions – using Zoom software – a practice established during the Covid pandemic and continued for convenience. |
| Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit |
Para 1.18 | The Trustees are aware of and have considered the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. |

| Policy on grant making | Para 1.38 | The Trustees consider grant applications from church organisations with the purpose of supporting mission within the former diocese of Wakefield specifically encouraging: • Congregational growth – projects which provide new facilities or initiatives to encourage increased attendance and support for churches • Attracting young people – new initiatives to attract and retain young worshippers • Community outreach – new projects to bring wider benefits to the wider local community, helping and working with local people. The Trustees look favourably on applications for: • Initiatives to encourage the formation of new Christian communities and groups • Projects working across parish boundaries • Environmental and green community initiatives. Applications are not normally approved for: • Salaries of paid staff • Purchase of equipment for “normal” patterns of worship • Building work – including the repair and restoration of church buildings. Examples of the projects benefitting from grants in the period are: mission to children and families, toddler groups, youth work and after school clubs, community lunches and coffee mornings, warm spaces, contributions towards community focused equipment and training, holiday clubs, musical outreach and missional events. |
