C H A I R M A N S R E P O R T

Another year in a partial lockdown. The theatre was virtually closed until May this year, when Tameside Youth Drama Group were the first production in to tread the boards and followed in the footsteps of Hyde Little Theatre last year who filmed their production with an empty auditorium. Our first production with an audience was in June and was Hyde Little Theatre’s ‘Sleeping Beauty the Pantomime Movie’ incorporating the new cinema set up. We saw virtual recorded performances from HLT, TYDG, ShowStoppers and Artsync earlier in the year. Firstly, I would like to thank every member of the management committee, officers and those involved in the productions for their resilience and determination in getting back to the theatre with ever changing rules and regulations. I understand it was depressingly difficult to plan such productions not knowing if or when displays could be shown.

We finally reopened for a live audience and live performance with Artsync’s theatre fundraiser, Artsync Live! in early September and since have had been delighted to reopen as ‘normal’ for Freedom Dancers, Bee-Amazed, LaVolta Events, Audio Addictz, Pinked Floyd, The Drama Department, Hyde Little Theatre, RBDA and currently Showstoppers.

It is very pleasing to see amongst the list above a lot of new groups and societies. This year alone, we have seen the inaugural performances at the theatre from BeeAmazed, LaVolta Events, Audio Addictz and Pinked Floyd. All of these groups are returning to us or have shown an interest in a provisional booking.

Eighteen months ago, we appealed to all of our constituent members to look at fundraising for the theatre and I have been overwhelmed by such support:

The support to the theatre from such fundraisers has been outstanding and I am so pleased groups have used their initiative and had a lot of fun along the way. To generate £4,191 in donations is outstanding! This is on top of the Just Giving Donations, Membership, Grants, Alexandra Picture House and other donations from groups.

We spent most of this year addressing the policies and rules at the theatre and updating them where we could. I am particularly proud to have overhauled the paperwork at the theatre and bring in the additional Health and Safety Video. We recently had an inspection at the theatre from the local authority and they were extremely satisfied with the theatre’s documentation and the awareness of fire, health and safety and procedures we have put in place. The group involved in the inspection also passed with flying colours. In recent years, I believe the theatre hasn’t been as official as I would like and I am glad groups are seeing the importance of paperwork, safety and due diligence and the interest in some groups on learning more about the theatre is second to none.

Another huge achievement for the theatre is bringing in its own bar for nonconstituents and constituent bodies that have surrendered their bars. This has generated the theatre thousands of pounds when we really needed it. The committee made the decision to put this in place to raise additional income and to have the bar under our own brand. I am extremely thankful to Martin Webber for setting this up and to Steven Oliver-Grant who has formally started our own HFT Volunteers programme which now sees dozens of volunteers helping the theatre.

Last year, we fitted our new fire alarm system and have spent this season doing various upgrades on the system, following feedback from users, and replacing smoke detectors to heat detectors and implementing fire evacuation plans to which all societies must adhere to.

We also this season had the opportunity to see the original stage’s condition and relay the protective hardboard after taking various photographs to assess the refurbishment needed in the future. Thank you to all those who were involved in this assessment and relaying.

We also changed the cast bathrooms to make one unisex bathroom and created a new multipurpose ‘Room 4’ which can be a green room or as a small dressing room. The feedback has been positive and shows this investment was indeed required.

We also have rebranded a lot of the theatre signage to incorporate a brand into the theatre and increase the theatres own brand and image around the building which has been noticed by thousands of patrons. Works are still ongoing on further signage.

We also relaunched the ‘Sponsor a seat’ campaign and received further donations and plaques will be fitted in the new year.

Further modernisation, cleaning and decorating was done in the early months of the season and I extend my thanks to everyone involved. Especially the ladies and gents from TYDG, ShowStoppers and Lee Wilde for their efforts.

I was also pleased to help create some small items of theatre branded merchandise earlier this year and now have some on sale at the bar for patrons who wish to support us. I believe we never truly found our modern image in the community and by producing our own merchandise, it is another step forward for the theatre.

This year, we have also seen a minor breakthrough in improving our relationship with our neighbours and are working on building a better relationship in terms of communication.

I am particularly proud looking at the attendance record for the committee for this season seeing so many people regularly attending and feel a part of the theatre and have their say. Collectively, we have made so many changes for the future of the building. I would also like to formally recognise Hyde Little Theatre, Sparks Event Management, Roger and Steve for full 100% attendance.

On a serious note, I would like to sincerely thank my fellow officers. It takes a lot of passion, dedication and commitment to be a theatre officer under my leadership as I plan to regenerate the theatre and the full committee doesn’t see the day-to-day running of the theatre and how much time it does actually take. We had our lowest point ever at the beginning of the season where we actually had to calculate outgoing costs, what we had in reserves and how many months we could operate even with cost cutting in place and when those months became weeks and days, we were truly facing the reality of permanent closure due to the pandemic and several months of zero income. To turn this round with ever changing legal restrictions was a monumental challenge and I hope you are as proud of the officers as I am.

I would also like to thank and recognise the Sparks team and especially Kelly. The theatre is not an easy place to clean and maintain, especially daily between shows. The endless bruises she receives from the seat arm rests and sheer energy she puts into this building is second to none and her efforts are not going unnoticed by users, groups and public coming into our theatre.

Vanessa Rothwell has also shown sheer determination for the theatre this year with her exceptional ongoing bid and grant writing skills. She has personally given her time outside of committee meetings to meet with me, write bids and find funders for items the committee needed funding for. I would also like to formally thank her for all of her efforts and assistance.

To finalise, my initial five-year plan has been completed in under 2 years. If I am reelected, I now have further visions for the development and improvement of the theatre and its facilities to bring the theatre to a new further level. Seeing so many groups and individuals comment on the current condition of the theatre and its facilities is overwhelming at times as my previous visions became reality and I hope to serve another term as Chairman.

APPENDIX 1: (Personal Information Hidden)

I need to give my apologies now for the AGM as I'll be in the Caribbean! I know my attendance has been very hit & miss over the last 2 years due to my ill health, family life etc & I totally understand if this means I can't continue as an Individual member but as you know the Theatre holds a very special place in my heart.... especially "My Bar" lol. From January ... unless I'm poorly ... I will attend each monthly meeting. I understand this has to be address formally at a committee meeting as I have missed more than 3 but I hope that my previous commitment to the Theatre might stand for something. APPENDIX 3:

We would like to be considered for membership on the HFA committee. We understand that the requirement is to attend (either virtually or in person) one committee meeting a month and undertake to send a PAP representative (from a pool of 5) to each committee meeting. As you are aware, we have been performing at HFT since 2014 (up until Covid kicked in) and we have no desire to perform elsewhere. We are happy to commit to the theatre, however we understand that only HFA Committee Companies are permitted to run their own bar for their productions. We would not be able to afford to stage productions at HFT but for the profits generated on the bar and therefore we were concerned we would need to find alternative venues. If we can be admitted to the Committee (and therefore entitled to run our own bar) we would be able to continue to commit to the Theatre.
