Chairman’s Report (Paula Dyde)

Annual General Meeting Period April 2020– March 2021

To be held on Wednesday 25[th] August 2021 @ 19:30hrs Virtual Meeting via Zoom

Welcome to TS Worcester, Sea Cadets AGM for the period 01 April 2020 to 31 March 2021. Thank you for taking the time out to attend

The purpose of this AGM is to:

  1. Approve and adopt accounts for the period 1[st] April 2019 - 31[st] March 2020

  2. Give an update on how the Unit has been managed during 2020/2021 period

  3. Present accounts for period 1[st] April 2020 - 31[st] March 2021 (Mrs Hemingway)

  4. Overview re management of Unit during period (Mrs Dyde)

  5. Elect new or re elect members to the UMT (Unit Management Team)

  6. Give parents, Unit friends the opportunity to meet Unit Members i.e. UMT, Staff, Civilian instructors, Unit Assistants.

  7. Give the opportunity for questions to be asked or concerns to be aired by parents, Unit friends & staff

  8. Encourage parents/friends to active role as part of UMT

  9. Following AGM - Arrange meeting for UMT to elect Chair, Treasurer & Secretary

The role of the Unit Management Team (UMT) is to work together to manage the financial affairs, and running of the unit, with the aim to ensure that it runs within our financial means, meets H&S requirements, all property and equipment is fully insured and that we are fully insured for all Cadet activities. Last but not least, we strive to ensure that we have a secure foundation going forward as per MSSC guidelines and Charity Commission regulations for the running of a Charity.

As part of our role we ensure that appropriate safe and secure buildings are available for Cadet activities and support Unit staff where we can.

As part of my role, I attend District Chair meetings to ensure we are on the right path and obtain knowledge & experience from our Area/District Chairman and other Chairs within the District.

As and when time permits, UMT members attend courses or do course online to help them in supporting the unit

We held our 2019/2020 AGM on 4 November 2020 – minutes/accounts of AGM available tonight for adoption. During the AGM the UMT members stood down, and upon request all agreed to stand again.

All UMT members do a sterling job within the unit – not just within their UMT roles, but other areas where their skills are best suited to help the unit to thrive.

Current UMC Members: Paula Dyde (Chair), Denise Harvey (Secretary/Vice Chair), Nicola Hemingway (Treasurer); CPO M Griffiths (CO), Fi Cox (resignation tendered prior to this AGM)

The UMT supports the training function of uniformed/non uniformed staff under the leadership and guidance of CPO Martin Griffiths (OiC).

2020-2021 Review

Due to the continuance of COVID restrictions, we have had another difficult year.

However the unit has continued to function inline with MSSC HQ guidelines, with face 2 face activities rather than online instruction coming into force Q2. We have also had new Cadets/Juniors joining during this period.

Thanks and appreciation goes to CPO Griffiths and his staff for their dedication to supporting cadet activities during this time.

We continue to have a well run unit with a good number of Juniors and our cadet numbers have increased during the year. All are busy achieving accreditations supported by dedicated uniformed and civilian instructors together with unit assistants and UMT.

Our main source of income during this period has been a number of grants we have been eligible for together with monthly contributions from Cadets for evenings attended.

Due to COVID restrictions imposed by MSSC HQ, we have not been able to do any face 2 face fund raising activities this year.

I would like to thank all UMT & Staff for their hard work and dedication to the Unit. Without your support we would not be able to instruct our Cadets.

Staff: We have seen a fluctuation in Staff numbers. Some of our Junior staff left to follow careers and Uni studies. Big thanks to our amazing and dedicated volunteer staff, both uniformed and non uniformed – who look after Juniors and Cadets and help to ensure that they learn all they can whilst having fun.

UMT: We have an amazing UMT to help run the unit. Sincere and appreciative thanks go the Mrs Denise Harvey, who again has worked tirelessly to ensure that we have attained all grant monies available to keep us financially solvent during this difficult year. Big thanks also to Mrs Nicola Hemingway who took on the mantle of Treasurer from Mrs Harvey this year.

Big thank you to you all for all that you do on a weekly/monthly basis both in front of and behind the scenes.

Army Cadets: We still maintain a good reciprocal relationship with Army Cadet Personnel – although there has been little interaction this year.

Diglis: Refurbishment continues at Diglis. We have finally completed the toilet facilities refurbishment. 2[nd] phase (galley/kitchen, disabled toilet facilities) to be reviewed and discussed for 2021/22

Canal River Trust (ex British Waterways): We continue to have good relationship with CRT

Cadet numbers: We have lost some Cadets following Covid but are now stable in numbers. We are growing these numbers steadily.

Subscriptions: The majority of Cadet Subscriptions are still paid monthly via standing order

WM RFCA: Our relationship remains stable

Have a few maintenance issues at the building, which we are trying to address with RFCA but due to lack of funding it is taking time to have these issues addressed.

Post Code Anywhere (now GBG plc) – continued to allow us to utilise their parking facilities

Financial stability: Our financial situation still remains stable and fairly healthy, even with our commitment to Diglis boating station. We even have a savings account and a working account for Diglis refurbishment. Mrs Hemingway will give update during her report. Big thank you to her for her hard work in looking after these accounts.

Futures:

We will continue to invest in training for Staff/UMT where needed

Continue to investigate grants available for Cadet activities (particularly offshore) when activities are permissible.

Investigate in earnest and apply for Grants for Diglis improvement and other capital equipment for the unit.

Continue to raise awareness of Sea Cadets within local community – and assist with community events where we can and when allowed to do so

Look at new ways to raise funds for unit

Look at new ways to obtain UMT members

Continue to work with CO to increase Staff/Cadet levels and encourage attendance to supporting training courses.

Wish list for 2021/22

Everyone to continue to stay safe and be well

Fencing to rear side of building (Diglis)

New flag pole (Diglis)

CCTV cameras (Diglis)

Additional Comments covering April 2021 to date:

  1. MSSC HQ / Area & District gave and are still giving support to units nationwide. We were able to secure available funding to help us through these trying times.

  2. Mrs Harvey was able to obtain further funding from Worcestershire County Council to financial support the unit

  1. Chief Griffiths is CO and with his dedication and leadership of his staff – we will go on from strength to strength

  2. We have been approached by Kate Cox, Worcester Paint Festival asking to view our premises as a prospect for the Festival in September. I am pleased to announce that we have been accepted and that we will have a dedicated artist to put their talents to great use on the large green wall and the end of our Diglis building. Artist will commence on 17[th] Sept through to 19[th] Sept

We are very excited about this – as not only will our building look fabulous – it will raise our profile in the Worcester community as we are sure to get a plethora of the public coming to view our wall.

I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to Tim Booker (formerly of Canal River Trust) for putting our name forward as a contender to be considered.

To conclude :

Due to the hard work and support of all within the unit, we remain financially secure at this stage. UMT is committed to look at new ways to raise funds and to help build a solid financial foundation for the future.

We are very proud of ALL our Cadets within the unit who meet, face and overcome various challenges during the course of the year with us... we see each success large or small as significant in each Cadets progress towards finding themselves and what they are capable of – truly rewarding!

With the continued dedication and support of all within the Unit, Cadets and Parents, we will continue to grow from strength to strength. Our dedicated Staff will continue to help our young people to be all they can possibly be and help them to achieve all they can possibly achieve.

We would encourage Parents to become more actively involved and encourage Parents to consider fund raising activities outside of those that we already do – perhaps even create PS & A (similar to that within schools). So please think about it and see me.

A very big and well deserved THANK YOU to all our adult volunteers and Thank you to our Cadets for continuing to attend the unit and for being part of our ‘Cadet Family’.

We look forward to continuing our success for as we move through 2021/22
