�I was fortunate enough to recei�e a bursary for the ������� annual National Youth Choir �rogramme. It was always my intention that this would be my final year with NYCGB, ha�ing been �art of the organisation since I auditioned for the Boys� Choir � years ago, aged ��.�

�It sim�ly would not ha�e been �ossible for me to finance my time with NYCGB without a bursary. �he once�in�a� lifetime ex�eriences such as �erforming in concert with the �allis �cholars and the National Youth Chamber Choir or e�en being scheduled to �erform at the World �ym�osium on choral music are one of the many reasons I lo�ed NYCGB, and the bursary scheme has made this all �ossible. It is not only the ex�erience, but also the skills �both musical and inter�ersonal� that I ha�e taken away from NYC. �he musical training, I recei�ed is world�class, and I ho�e to further these skills in any choirs that I �oin �ost�lockdown.� �ational �out� ��oir �ember 2019-20

��hie�ements and �erforman�e

�uilding on t�e successes of t�e previous �ear� ����� planned an ambitious and inspirational programme for 2019-20� T�e arrival of t�e �ovid-19 pandemic� si� mont�s into t�e financial �ear and �ust t�o �ee�s before t�e start of our busiest period of deliver�� �as inevitabl� �ad a significant impact on our abilit� to deliver against t�is planned programme and associated strategic ob�ectives t�is �ear�

�ollo�ing restrictions implemented b� t�e �� �overnment� ����� too� t�e decision to cancel all planned spring and summer residential courses� concerts and open events in 2020� T�is �as an unprecedented situation in our 3�-�ear �istor� but an essential step in ensuring �e pla�ed our part in protecting our members� staff and t�e �ider public�

�o�ever� ������s et�os is to bring �oung people toget�er� �e �ave been determined to come t�roug� t�is and ensure �e not onl� �eep t�e nation singing in t�e future� but also support our �oung singers and our team of permanent and freelance staff during t�is crisis� ��ile not�ing can replace t�e visceral t�rill of live ensemble singing� in t�e period �pril to September 2020 �e �ave e�plored alternative �a�s to continue to engage our members� emerging artists and �ider communit� in e�ceptional musical learning opportunities s�ills development and performance� and �ave found innovative �a�s to deliver �e� aspects of our programme digitall��

Auditions

����� continues to recruit �oung singers for our c�oirs b� auditioning �idel� across t�e ��� In 2019� �80 �oung singers auditioned to �oin ����� for our 2019-20 programme� 28 audition da�s �ere �eld across 2� locations� �it� a furt�er t�o online audition da�s aiming to provide an increased level of support to �oung singers in more remote areas and t�ose facing barriers to attending an �in-person� audition� T�is broug�t t�e total audition da�s to 30 � our �ig�est ever� �13 ��1�� applicants �ere successful in being a�arded places to �oin t�e c�oirs as a ne� member or to progress t�roug� t�e c�oirs�

�e are committed to being an inclusive� representative organisation� In �arc� 2020 �e commenced a revie� of our member recruitment processes� �it� t�e aim of ma�ing auditions more accessible� and gro�ing t�e pool and t�e diversit� of candidates� �ovid-19 �as accelerated c�anges to ������s auditions programme� In �a� �e successfull� moved all auditions for t�e �ational �out� ��oir �nnual Programme 2020-21 online� and in �ugust �e over�auled t�e format� scoring criteria and communications for �ational �out� Training ��oir� �irls� ��oir and �o�s� ��oir auditions due to ta�e place online in �ctober and �ovember� �e plan to complete our revie� of auditions �it� furt�er c�anges to be implemented in 2021�

T�e flags�ip �ational �out� ��oir commenced t�e second �ear of t�e ne� �nnual Programme� ��ic� aims to offer unbeatable musical e�periences for our �oung people� empo�ering t�em to develop advanced vocal s�ills and perform more c�allenging �or�s� and supporting creative collaborations �it� a diversit� of artists across a range of musical st�les� �embers attended t�e �iscover� �ee�end in autumn 2019 and performed as part of t�e Ro�al �lbert �all ��ristmas programme in �ecember� Sadl�� t�eir planned spring residential� and t�e summer international tour to �e� �ealand and �ustralia �ere cancelled� In addition� t�e seven planned residential courses for members of t�e �ational �out� �irls�� �o�s� and Training ��oirs in �pril and �ugust 2020� �it� 900 participants boo�ed to attend� �ere also cancelled�

T�e ����� team �or�ed �ard to plan and develop an alternative online course programme across our c�oirs� In spring� despite cancellation ta�ing place �ust t�o �ee�s before courses �ere due to start� �e delivered free digital activities and resources via �oom and �ouTube for our �irls� and �o�s� ��oir members� and piloted online courses for Training ��oir and t�e �ational �out� ��oir� In summer� �it� a longer lead-in� �e �ere able to plan and deliver a compre�ensive online course programme for eac� of our c�oirs�

I en�oyed so much about the online �rogramme � it felt �ust like a real course and I lo�ed it� I really struggle with anxiety and being able to reach out to the �astoral team and staff members no matter what time, made a big difference so that I could comfortably engage in the course in my own way. In 2019-20 �e recruited our fift� co�ort of eig�t talented aspiring professionals aged 18 to 2� to ta�e part in t�e annual ����� �ello�s�ip training programme� ��ic� aims to develop participants as effective c�oral leaders and educators as �ell as performers� T�is �as t�e second �ear t�at t�e �ello�s �ere Section �eaders of t�e �ational �out� ��oir� adding a furt�er dimension to t�eir training as peer leaders and mentors for t�e c�oir in re�earsal and performance� and forming t�e core of t�e �ational �out� ��amber ��oir�

��alking to the Young Com�osers was as educational for me as it might ha�e been for them. In so many ways, the �rofession of com�osing has changed enormously since I started out nearly �� years ago. �owe�er, this lot were all incredibly bright, s�arky and engaging and com�letely able to im�lement the suggestions I made re� communication with audiences and �erformers, during e�ery �art of the com�osition �rocess. It was also �ery gratifying to see how interested they were in music from other countries and cultures and I ho�e it�ll �ro�ide �lenty of ins�iration for them, in years to come.�

��ile �ovid-19 prevented our co�orts of emerging professional artists from meeting in person after �arc�� participants in bot� programmes embraced a move online and training sessions� virtual recordings � ranging from �lgar to R�ianna� masterclasses� mentoring� and participation in ����� digital courses all too� place over t�e summer� T�an�s to t�e support of �ritten Pears �rts our �oung �omposers �ere also able to ta�e part in �ee�-long creative composition residencies at t�e �ome of �en�amin �ritten as loc�do�n eased in t�e summer� T�eir final compositions �ill be recorded in t�e autumn and released in earl� 2021�

��he �irtual session was hugely en�oyable in so many ways. It was wonderful to ha�e time to work with the �ellows, to hear their comments on the draft �ieces and to continue building a feeling of community with the grou�. �he sessions with guest s�eakers were all incredibly hel�ful and interesting. I �articularly gained from learning about tax from �manda �ean and the session with �oxanna �anufnik. T�e statement of financial activities for 2019-20 s�o�s an annual deficit of �28�8�8� T�e principal factor contributing to t�e loss �as t�e immediate cessation of activities re�uired to support t�e nation�ide measures applied to restrict t�e spread of t�e pandemic� T�e loc�do�n �as re�uired �ust as t�e ������s season of residential courses � our principal income earning activit� � �as about to start� S�itc�ing from residential to online provision enabled some activit�� but t�is �ad a significant impact on t�e financial model� �e �ere able to offset some of t�is loss of income t�roug� related reductions in direct programme e�penditure�
