�o �oung person s�ould be precluded from ta�ing part because of financial �ards�ip� �ll ����� participation fees are subsidised and a �e� message in t�e promotion of ����� auditions and opportunities is t�e availabilit� of additional generous financial assistance for �oung people from lo�-income families to support costs of auditions� members�ip� uniform costs� course fees and associated travel for members and t�eir families� 

T�e development of our national �earning and �ngagement programme �as continued to enable us to reac� a greater number of talented �oung singers from an increasingl� �ide range of bac�grounds� T�is is reflected in an ongoing gro�t� in demand for financial assistance a�ards�  In 2013-1� �e assisted 11� �oung people �it� 12� a�ards� in 2019-20 t�is �as increased to 2�0 bursaries a�arded to 1�2 recipients� �lt�oug� t�e total value of t�ese a�ards �as reduced t�is �ear to ��2�832 due to t�e impact of �ovid-19 on our programmes� �e continue to pro�ect a gro�ing need to remove financial barriers to participation for more �oung singers� and �ill continue to

_�I was fortunate enough to recei�e a bursary for the ������� annual National Youth Choir �rogramme. It was always my intention that this would be my final year with NYCGB, ha�ing been �art of the organisation since I auditioned for the Boys� Choir � years ago, aged ��.�_ 

_�It sim�ly would not ha�e been �ossible for me to finance my time with NYCGB without a bursary. �he once�in�a� lifetime ex�eriences such as �erforming in concert with the �allis �cholars and the National Youth Chamber Choir or e�en being scheduled to �erform at the World �ym�osium on choral music are one of the many reasons I lo�ed NYCGB, and the bursary scheme has made this all �ossible. It is not only the ex�erience, but also the skills �both musical and inter�ersonal� that I ha�e taken away from NYC. �he musical training, I recei�ed is world�class, and I ho�e to further these skills in any choirs that I �oin �ost�lockdown.�_ �ational �out� ��oir �ember 2019-20 

## **��hie�ements and �erforman�e** 

�uilding on t�e successes of t�e previous �ear� ����� planned an ambitious and inspirational programme for 2019-20� T�e arrival of t�e �ovid-19 pandemic� si� mont�s into t�e financial �ear and �ust t�o �ee�s before t�e start of our busiest period of deliver�� �as inevitabl� �ad a significant impact on our abilit� to deliver against t�is planned programme and associated strategic ob�ectives t�is �ear� 

�ollo�ing restrictions implemented b� t�e �� �overnment� ����� too� t�e decision to cancel all planned spring and summer residential courses� concerts and open events in 2020� T�is �as an unprecedented situation in our 3�-�ear �istor� but an essential step in ensuring �e pla�ed our part in protecting our members� staff and t�e �ider public� 

�o�ever� ������s et�os is to bring �oung people toget�er� �e �ave been determined to come t�roug� t�is and ensure �e not onl� �eep t�e nation singing in t�e future� but also support our �oung singers and our team of permanent and freelance staff during t�is crisis� ��ile not�ing can replace t�e visceral t�rill of live ensemble singing� in t�e period �pril to September 2020 �e �ave e�plored alternative �a�s to continue to engage our members� emerging artists and �ider communit� in e�ceptional musical learning opportunities s�ills development and performance� and �ave found innovative �a�s to deliver �e� aspects of our programme digitall�� 

## **Re�ie� of a�ti�ities** 

## _**Auditions**_ 

����� continues to recruit �oung singers for our c�oirs b� auditioning �idel� across t�e ��� In 2019� �80 �oung singers auditioned to �oin ����� for our 2019-20 programme� 28 audition da�s �ere �eld across 2� locations� �it� a furt�er t�o online audition da�s aiming to provide an increased level of support to �oung singers in more remote areas and t�ose facing barriers to attending an �in-person� audition� T�is broug�t t�e total audition da�s to 30 � our �ig�est ever� �13 ��1�� applicants �ere successful in being a�arded places to �oin t�e c�oirs as a ne� member or to progress t�roug� t�e c�oirs� 

�e are committed to being an inclusive� representative organisation� In �arc� 2020 �e commenced a revie� of our member recruitment processes� �it� t�e aim of ma�ing auditions more accessible� and gro�ing t�e pool and t�e diversit� of candidates� �ovid-19 �as accelerated c�anges to ������s auditions programme� In �a� �e successfull� moved all auditions for t�e �ational �out� ��oir �nnual Programme 2020-21 online� and in �ugust �e over�auled t�e format� scoring criteria and communications for �ational �out� Training ��oir� �irls� ��oir and �o�s� ��oir auditions due to ta�e place online in �ctober and �ovember� �e plan to complete our revie� of auditions �it� furt�er c�anges to be implemented in 2021�

�ue to its largel� seasonal nature� ������s programme of innovative training and progression opportunities for our c�oirs in 2019-20 �as been severel� impacted b� �ovid-19� 

T�e flags�ip �ational �out� ��oir commenced t�e second �ear of t�e ne� �nnual Programme� ��ic� aims to offer unbeatable musical e�periences for our �oung people� empo�ering t�em to develop advanced vocal s�ills and perform more c�allenging �or�s� and supporting creative collaborations �it� a diversit� of artists across a range of musical st�les� �embers attended t�e �iscover� �ee�end in autumn 2019 and performed as part of t�e Ro�al �lbert �all ��ristmas programme in �ecember� Sadl�� t�eir planned spring residential� and t�e summer international tour to �e� �ealand and �ustralia �ere cancelled� In addition� t�e seven planned residential courses for members of t�e �ational �out� �irls�� �o�s� and Training ��oirs in �pril and �ugust 2020� �it� 900 participants boo�ed to attend� �ere also cancelled� 

T�e ����� team �or�ed �ard to plan and develop an alternative online course programme across our c�oirs� In spring� despite cancellation ta�ing place �ust t�o �ee�s before courses �ere due to start� �e delivered free digital activities and resources via �oom and �ouTube for our �irls� and �o�s� ��oir members� and piloted online courses for Training ��oir and t�e �ational �out� ��oir� In summer� �it� a longer lead-in� �e �ere able to plan and deliver a compre�ensive online course programme for eac� of our c�oirs� 

�ll ����� courses and programmes aim to offer members a ric� and inspirational learning e�perience� and �e �ere �ust as ambitious for our �or� online� T�e programme �as designed to deliver as muc� of t�e e�perience of an ����� residential course as possible� including musicians�ip �ebinars� masterclasses �it� professional artists� �or�s�ops� individual singing lessons� �le�ander Tec�ni�ue classes� social activities� full and sectional virtual c�oir re�earsals� and virtual recordings� �ur online programmes engaged �30 members in total� �it� 9�� of participants reporting a positive and en�o�able e�perience� 

_I en�oyed so much about the online �rogramme � it felt �ust like a real course and I lo�ed it� I really struggle with anxiety and being able to reach out to the �astoral team and staff members no matter what time, made a big difference so that I could comfortably engage in the course in my own way._ Training ��oir �ember 2020 

�oving online afforded uni�ue opportunities to connect our members �it� a diverse range of inspirational international artists� �uest artists �or�ing �it� t�e c�oirs t�is summer included �nt�on� Trece�-�ing in t�e �S� Sofi �eannin from �rance and �nders �denrot� in S�eden� It �ould �ave been impossible to bring toget�er t�is prestigious roster in person and �e are e�cited about t�e potential of future international collaborations� 

T�e artistic t�eme celebrated across ������s programme for t�e �ear �as ��ultural Identit��� Inspired b� t�e �orld S�mposium on ��oral �usic �e e�plored t�roug� c�oral music t�e relations�ip �umans �ave �it� t�e land t�at supports t�em� t�e sense of identit� t�e� derive from it and t�e tensions t�at arise out of it� T�e t�eme called to mind suc� notions as famil�� identit�� place� communit�� culture� celebration� colonialism� dispossession� alienation� partners�ip� freedom� environmentalism� to name but a fe�� 

����� �as remained committed to ensuring a diverse balance of musical programming and �as continued to c�ampion music composed or arranged b� artists ��o �ave �istoricall� been under-represented in t�e c�oral music sector� T�roug� member forums and discussions� �e encourage our �oung people to e�plore t�e �ider conte�t of c�oral music and deepen t�eir understanding be�ond t�e notes on t�e page� �e continue to include a range of voices and perspectives in our planning processes� including our �reative �orum members� and our �ember Representatives� �lected eac� �ear b� t�eir peers� t�e reps contribute to evaluation� strategic planning� �oard meetings and are no� vital organisational voices ensuring t�at our programmes remain relevant and inspiring to t�e �oung people at t�e �eart of ������

����� c�oirs gave a total of 1� live performances in 2019-20� �an� sc�eduled performances post-�arc� �ad to be cancelled� including our end of course concerts� pop-up performances and appearances at t�e ��� Proms� T�ree ��oirs and Spitalfields festivals� so concerts fell s�ort of t�e �� delivered in t�e previous �ear� �o�ever� ����� c�oirs reac�ed total live audiences of �8��3� � a 3�� increase on our audience reac� in 2018-19� T�is is in large part t�an�s to our performance partners�ips� notabl� �it� t�e Ro�al �lbert �all and a ne� relations�ip �it� t�e Tallis Sc�olars launc�ed in �ebruar�� 

�e �ere �een to ensure our c�oirs continued to �ave t�e opportunit� to s�o�case t�e breadt� and brilliance of t�eir �or� to a �ider audience� and in lieu of t�e usual end of course concert performances� �e supported eac� c�oir to ta�e part in virtual recording pro�ects� �ac� participant recorded and submitted t�eir individual part and t�ese trac�s �ere digitall� edited into c�oral ensemble performances� T�e programme included t�ree ne� �or�s commissioned b� ������

����� strives to increase t�e accessibilit� of �ig�-�ualit� singing opportunities across t�e �� and to empo�er more �oung people t�roug� t�e transformative and po�erful e�perience of singing toget�er� �espite t�e gro�ing bod� of evidence of t�e personal and social benefits of music-ma�ing� opportunities for �oung people to participate and develop t�eir s�ills var� �idel�� T�roug� our national �earning and �ngagement programme �e aim to inspire more �oung people in state education and from a �ider range of bac�grounds to discover and progress t�eir passion for singing� t�roug� inclusive and �ig� �ualit� regional opportunities� �sing our uni�ue musical and educational e�pertise� �e see� to understand barriers and c�allenges for �oung people and �or� �it� partners including sc�ools� music education �ubs and music organisations to create bespo�e singing programmes t�at meet local needs and �elp remove regional ine�ualities in singing provision and participation�

_��alking to the Young Com�osers was as educational for me as it might ha�e been for them. In so many ways, the �rofession of com�osing has changed enormously since I started out nearly �� years ago. �owe�er, this lot were all incredibly bright, s�arky and engaging and com�letely able to im�lement the suggestions I made re� communication with audiences and �erformers, during e�ery �art of the com�osition �rocess. It was also �ery gratifying to see how interested they were in music from other countries and cultures and I ho�e it�ll �ro�ide �lenty of ins�iration for them, in years to come.�_

��ile �ovid-19 prevented our co�orts of emerging professional artists from meeting in person after �arc�� participants in bot� programmes embraced a move online and training sessions� virtual recordings � ranging from �lgar to R�ianna� masterclasses� mentoring� and participation in ����� digital courses all too� place over t�e summer� T�an�s to t�e support of �ritten Pears �rts our �oung �omposers �ere also able to ta�e part in �ee�-long creative composition residencies at t�e �ome of �en�amin �ritten as loc�do�n eased in t�e summer� T�eir final compositions �ill be recorded in t�e autumn and released in earl� 2021� 

_��he �irtual session was hugely en�oyable in so many ways. It was wonderful to ha�e time to work with the �ellows, to hear their comments on the draft �ieces and to continue building a feeling of community with the grou�. �he sessions with guest s�eakers were all incredibly hel�ful and interesting. I �articularly gained from learning about tax from �manda �ean and the session with �oxanna �anufnik. It was also really great to meet the team from �tainer and Bell and to learn about the �ublishing �rocess.�_ �isa Robertson� �oung �omposer 2020

T�e statement of financial activities for 2019-20 s�o�s an annual deficit of �28�8�8� T�e principal factor contributing to t�e loss �as t�e immediate cessation of activities re�uired to support t�e nation�ide measures applied to restrict t�e spread of t�e pandemic� T�e loc�do�n �as re�uired �ust as t�e ������s season of residential courses � our principal income earning activit� � �as about to start� S�itc�ing from residential to online provision enabled some activit�� but t�is �ad a significant impact on t�e financial model� �e �ere able to offset some of t�is loss of income t�roug� related reductions in direct programme e�penditure�

�����'s total reserves at 30 September 2020 �ere ��33����� �uture planning is fundamental to ������s operation� combining t�e seasonal nature of annual activities �it� t�e necessit� of planning programmes and pro�ects more t�an one �ear a�ead� to lin� �it� t�e e�pected advance sc�edules of partner venues and guest artists� T�e reserves polic� reflects t�e need to provide a degree of securit� to support advance planning over longer timescales� and to provide confidence to sta�e�olders t�at artistic plans are soundl� based and funded� 

Trustees �ave previousl� agreed t�e need to �old sufficient reserves to cover a suitable period of salar� and ot�er operational costs as a budget and cas� flo� contingenc� in t�e event of a significant loss of income� In 2019-20 a balance of �3���000 �as designated to t�is purpose� In t�e lig�t of t�e �ovid-19 pandemic� t�e trustees �ave revie�ed t�ese funds to ensure t�e� are sufficient� T�e� �ave determined t�at t�e suitable level of budget and cas�flo� contingenc� needs to cover t�e e�uivalent of 12 mont�s� staffing costs ��ic� �ill enable ����� to manage t�e organisation t�roug� potential future c�anges in t�e economic climate or e�ceptional events and to commit to longer-term planning� ��00�000 is no� designated as a budget and cas� flo� contingenc��

Trustees agree t�at ����� currentl� retains a suitable level of reserves to �elp mitigate immediate financial pressures and manage anticipated cas�flo� needs in t�e coming �ear�
