TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT for the Year Ended 31 MAY 2025

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Governing document

The charity is governed by its constitution adopted on the 14 June 1973.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITES

Public benefit

The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity’s aims and objectives and in planning future activities.

Objectives and activities

The objectives as set out in the charity’s constitution are to educate the public by the study and practice of choral music and the concert performance of choral works.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

The charity continued to educate the public through its study and performance of choral music. Once again, we held a Come and Sing evening at the start of the season and delivered a programme of three concerts, one of which was a Gala performance of Verdi’s Requiem at the Baths Hall to celebrate the Society’s 80[th] Anniversary. We were joined in this venture by Gainsborough Choral Society, and performed with an Orchestra of over 60 players, a professional conductor and soloists. The event was outside the normal scope of the Society and made possible by a significant private donation recorded in the 2023-24 accounts. It attracted an audience of nearly 600 people. Preparation included a workshop for singers delivered by an expert in the work.

The overall deficit for the period reflects the significant cost of staging the Verdi Requiem concert, and a further investment in staging made possible by the previously noted donation. However, the number of paying members and guests increased again, with Subscription income and receipts from Ticket Sales above previous levels. Members participated in the North Lincs Rotary Swimarathon which increased Fund Raising income, and the Society continued to benefit from corporate sponsorship towards the cost of our Christmas Concert.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

A deficit of £5,085.55 (surplus 2024 – £20,569.36) arose during the year, leaving funds at 31 May 2025 of £36,549.26 (2024 - £41,634.81).
