INTRODUCTION AND WELCOME FROM GROUP CHAIR

Russ Ketley thanked everybody for attending and for their ongoing support of 5th Dartford Scout Group. He explained that the Scouts are going through a transition which will involve some new terminology and role titles. RK also explained that 5th Dartford has been using ‘unregistered land’, owing to some misplaced deeds, however this has now been resolved and 5th Dartford have been granted ‘absolute title’ which means that there is no longer any question over land ownership.

GOVERNANCE TOPICS

The minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 7th October 2023 were approved by all in attendance.

Adopt the model constitution from Policy, Organisation and Rules Scout Group 5.4 District’s financial year will continue as previous years (1st April to 31st March)

The number of members that may be appointed to the Trustee Board agreed to be 10. The quorum for future meetings of the Group Scout Council – agreed to be 7.

GROUP LEAD VOLUNTEER’S REPORT

Paul Boreham thanked everybody for coming and encouraged all to look at the photo presentation (projected on the wall) which showcased many of the activities enjoyed by the young people, which were provided above and beyond the weekly meetings. Some of this year’s achievements include:

19th October 2024 - Microlight Flying lead by Sam. There are still places available.

9th November 2024 - Fireworks Evening at Scout House organised by Tim. Tickets cost £5

1st December 2024 – Celebrating the 108th birthday of 5th Dartford Scout Group at the Methodist Church, Dartford.

2nd – 9th August 2025 - Kent International Jamboree. OSM invites will be sent out to all Scouts and Explorers.

All this is only possible with volunteers giving up their time and energy, providing a safe, engaging and exciting programme of ‘Skills for Life’ that inspire and attract new members. Alice and David have

really built up the Beaver and Cub packs resulting in the group receiving Kent Scouts ‘Grow 50’ Bronze award with our youth membership increasing from 53 to 67. This is in addition to over 28 existing Explorers.

Member updates:

Beverly Panton has stepped down from her role as auditor after 25 years. Many thanks to her for everything that she has done for 5th Dartford.

John White (affectionately known as Captain Carrot) passed away earlier this year.

Gary Missions who has been our Master at Arms Group Instructor for many years has been unwell but expects to return from hospital soon.

GROUP TREASURER’S REPORT

Income = £29,054 Expenditure = £24,560 2024 BALANCE = 195,134

Karen Hannah reported that all the finances are now online and the accounts have been moved to Charity Foundation. We are nearly paper free!

5th Dartford has already spent in excess of £10,000 on work for the new hall, including ground surveys. As costs have continued to escalate, the subs payments have increased from £12-£16 and they will be increased again to £20 in April 2025. If any members are struggling with the increased cost of living and have concerns KH encouraged them to speak to the Scout Leader. There will be an ongoing focus upon fundraising and 5th Scouts hope to sign up for Gift Aid as soon as possible.

A request for £3500 has been submitted to Dartford Council as part of their Salute to Youth initiative. This money will help to fund the reopening of the climbing wall, along with some new equipment.

CLOSING REMARKS

District Lead Volunteer – Neil Gearing

NG referred to the wealth of opportunities provided by 5th Dartford Scout Group and thanked all the volunteers who have made this possible. He also thanked the young people who are central to group and requested that they look at the Scout website and contribute their ideas for activities for the next camp. NG reported that 5th Dartford can repeat Award 50 next year and confirmed that there would be no additional charge from the district. NG also thanked the trustee board, JK and AL for their ongoing support.

Leader of Council – Jeremy Kite

JK emphasised the high value that Dartford Council places upon the role of 5th Dartford Scout Group and explained how this aligns with the Council’s drive to prioritise youth services and facilities. He acknowledged that Kent County Council have struggled to meet the needs of young people and therefore Dartford Council aims to plug those gaps wherever possible. He thanked all involved at 5th Dartford.

AL shared his own experience of scouting as a young person and how the opportunities that this provided continues to benefit him even now! He is proud to be an ex-scout and wants to use his year as Mayor to promote and support the scouting movement.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

The new managers of Kip McGrath Dartford briefly explained the tutoring service that they provide and offered to support 5th Dartford Scout Group through sponsorship, providing badges etc.

PB offered two tickets to Southend’s Adventure Island which he is unable to use – he is taking bids! Tea, coffee and cake will be available after the meeting alongside an air rifle shooting competition.
