GSL Statement

As the Scout Association reverts to a “business-as-usual” or Green Status we, at Ockendon Group find ourselves well positioned to move forward in a meaningful way. As a team we have secured significant funding in addition to what was made available from government and local authority schemes. This has enabled Ockendon Group to operate our building and program with minimal impact. It has also enabled us to soften the blow to other organisations that use the building to support the local community in other ways under Guiding and Youth Club activities.

With the dedication of our leadership team, we have continued to provide our sections the best practical and engaging program possible under the restrictions. We have safely managed outdoor group activities and fundraising such as Fireworks, Remembrance, and grant applications. We have retained our numbers where some groups have been impacted. In short, every effort has been made to maintain our presence in the local community and provide engaging support for our young people.

As we are recently permitted face-to-face engagement, we have big plans. Camping season is upon us and we will be in full attendance. The Dorset trip took place and planning is underway for District camps, Mega Camp & Reineck Germany trip to name a few. Ockendon Fun Day is proposed for May, Firework Night in November and we will return this year with our popular Christmas Fayre. 2022 will also see the formation of our newest section Squirrels which will bring a new dynamic to our group.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ockendon’s Executive Committee and the Scouting leadership teams for their impressive dedication to the Scouting values. Without their continued support Ockendon Group would not find itself in such a fortunate position.

Thank you.

Leaders Reports

Beavers

Good evening, all

It is nice to see you all since our last AGM.

1[st] Ockendon Beavers have 22 beavers, 2 Leaders 2 helpers and 3 young leaders.

Since 2019 we have had a very difficult 2 years with covid, but Ockendon have been very busy during these times, although we could not meet face-to-face, we have kept beavers going through Zoom meetings which were very well attended by the beavers.

We have had 10 Beavers during the 2 years gain their Bronze award and have done 14 assorted badges and 2 virtual sleepovers.

I would like to thank all my leaders, helpers and junior leaders and of course the parents for all their help during this time, without them I could not have made this 2 years work.

Looking forward to the coming year, we are on course to get most of the beavers their bronze award this term, and to get their new badge done.

Many thanks

Malcolm BSL

Cubs

Evening Parents, Leaders and Attendees,

Since the last AGM the cubs section, as always, has been extremely active.

Cubs have maintained a program in person where possible, on-line or via correspondence when not. During the midst of the lock-down the leadership team worked hard to have a constant presence online via Zoom for the young people to have a place where they were able to interact with their peers, participate in activities and hopefully have some fun away from the impacts of Covid 19.

The program was robust enough to ensure that all cubs moving on to scouts were able to gain the Chief Scout Silver Award with a mixture of content that was suitable to be deployed in a home setting. Weekend door to door deliveries of activities packs by the leaders enabled the YP to continue to receive badges and awards that might otherwise have been forgotten or delayed. One particular opportunity to “Camp at Home” was a tremendous success.

Since returning to face-to-face activities, the pack has moved from strength to strength. One of the few packs within the District to retain their numbers. Since starting we have signed up to the renowned Germany trip, Mega Camp and are actively recruiting members with such programmes as “bring a friend” nights.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Cubs leadership team, Section helpers and Young Leaders for all the effort and dedication that freely given to make sure that 1st Ockendon Cubs is, and continues to be a valued resource to the local community.

Cubs Leadership Team

Scouts

It was a tough two years for our Scouts during lockdown however, we did retain all our Scouts and actually increased our numbers through Cubs swimming up and new joiners. Not only that, 9 Scouts achieved their Gold Awards through Virtual Scouting, with thanks to Colin Ward for his assistance.

We had weekly meetings via Zoom for quite some time. Scouts as a Group attended the District Virtual Camps, Jamba Homa Camp and the Great Indoors Camp Out, along with many other smaller District lead activities. We even managed to celebrate VE Day virtually by making cakes, decorating our homes and gardens with bunting and singing We'll Meet Again with Versa Lynn on video. We promoted outdoor activities for Scouting and had a number of Scouts join the District Fishing Competition.

From our first face-to-face we hit the ground running and have actively grown Scouting at 1[st] Ockendon. We even managed a late camp at Cherrywood in October, which was very damp but we all still managed to have fun and achieved the outdoors Challenge Badge sections of knife, axe and saw, fire lighting, outdoor cooking and wide games.

I would like to thank my co-leaders for their support and would like to push on from this fantastic restart to Scouting.

I would also like to thank the parents on behalf of all the leaders for their patience, understanding and assistance in helping us to keep Scouting going in difficult times. Lastly, I'd like to thank all the young people for being brilliant, enjoying what they do and understanding the difficulties we have all faced.

QMs Report

It’s been a tough year, especially with not being able to get all equipment out to camp, which is where it should be. With the help of section leaders the tents were put up within the HQ to air (social distance observed of course) and with the grant obtained we were able to purchase a new 12 person tent to replace two old 5 person tents which had done the group good service.

Looking forward to a better year.
