Thetrusteespresenttheirreportwiththefinancialstatementsofthecharityfortheyear ended
31December2020.ThetrusteeshaveadoptedtheprovisionsofAccountingandReportingby Charities:
StatementofRecommendedPracticeapplicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordance with
the FinancialReportingStandardapplicablein the UK and Republicof Ireland(FRS 102)(effective1 January
2019).
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
ObjectivesandaimsTheCancerTreatmentandResearchTrust(CTRT)whichwasfoundedin 1985,
supportsworkmainlyin the departmentsof medicaloncologyat the WestLondonCancerCentrebased at
CharingCrossHospitalandin thedepartmentofmedicaloncologyat theMountVernonCancerCentre, in
Northwood,Middlesex.TheCTRTexiststosupporttreatmentandresearchintomanyformsof malignant
diseaseandhasbeenparticularlyinvolvedinunderstandinghowcertaincancersdevelop,finding better
waystomonitorthemanddevelopingnewanti-canceragents.Itremainscommittedtofunding research
thatisnotadequatelyfundedeitherbythemajorcancercharities,theMRCorthe pharmaceutical
industry.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Charitable activities
ThebenefitsoftheTrust'sworkaretheimprovementoftheunderstandingofandmonitoringof cancer,
thedevelopmentofnewtreatmentsandthefundingofon-goingresearch,theeducationof future
researchers,thedisseminationofresearchfindings(judgedbypublicationsandcitations),withthe goal
being to assist people suffering from cancer.
ThetrusteesarepleasedwiththeachievementsandperformanceoftheTrustin2020despite the
difficulties caused by Covid-19 pandemic.
TheCTRTin2020fundedpartofthelaboratoryrunningexpensesforseveralPhDand post-doctoral
researchers at Charing Cross/Hammersmith Hospitals.
In 2020atMountVernonCancerCentre,theCTRThasbeenfundingthesalaryofa clinicaltrialsofficer, a
clinicaltrialsassistantaswellasaPhDresearchfellow,partofthesalariesofascientificofficer, PhD
student and the expenses (bench and tuition fees) of a clinical research fellow doing a PhD.
The research supported by the CTRT can be roughly split into the following areas:

FINANCIAL REVIEW Financial position Income level in 2020
TheCOVIDpandemicsignificantlyaffectedthelevelofunrestricteddonations,themainsourceof income
for the Trust,with far feweropportunitiesfor interactionwith the relevantpublic.Closureof hospitals and
fewerinteractionswiththepatientshasalsolimitedopportunitiesforfundraising.However,CTRThas a
sufficientamountoffinancialreservesallowingtheTrusttocontinueresearchandcomplywiththe policy
to hold funds amounting to at least 18 months' salary for those who is funded by the CTRT.
In 2020CTRThas supporteda researchsalarybill of £90,621and another£65,580of runningexpenses and
lab fees.
Reserves policy
Sufficientreservesare maintainedto ensurethat all expenses,as well as futureresearchcosts,are covered
in the event no donations are received in any one year.
For many years the CTRT receivedfunds to pay for researchstaff running clinicaltrials from pharmaceutical
companiesand trialorganisations.IncreasinglythesefundshavebeenpaiddirectlytothelocalNHS Trusts
whoemploythesestaff.As of 1stJanuary2008the accountsrelatedto MountVernonCancerCentre only
include income and expenses actually paid into or out of CTRT accounts.

FUTURE PLANS Future studies
- New charity structure
In 2020,theBoardofTrusteesforCTRTwereadvisedtoimplementa newstructureforthecharityin line
withthe CharityCommission'srecommendations.The CTRThas lodgedan applicationforregistrationas a
Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) using one of the models recommended.
- Investing in fundraising
The CTRT updatedand approveda coupleof essentialpolicies.A smallgroup of CTRT volunteershave been
identified.They are being veryhelpfulin the developmentof socialmediapresence.It is envisagedthat we
willcontinuetoexpandthisgroupandexploreexpandingcurrentandimplementingnew fundraising
initiatives in the next year.
- Plans for research
TheCTRTwillcontinuetosupportadiversevarietyofresearchintoseveraldifferenttypesof common
cancerssuchaslung,ovarianandmelanomaandalsorarecancerssuchasgestational trophoblastic
neoplasiaandovariangermcelltumours.Thisresearchincludesstudiesbothintheclinicandin the
laboratoryfocusedondevelopingnovelbiomarkersandcancertreatmentsemployingthe latest
technologies.Immunotherapycontinuestobeamajorareaofinterestinthecancerworldand CTRT
continuestosupportleadingresearchstudyingtheeffectsofImmunotherapyintrophoblastic,lung and
renal cancers.

Governing document
Thecharityiscontrolledbyitsgoverningdocument,adeedoftrustandconstitutesan unincorporated
charity.
The CancerTreatmentand ResearchTrust(CTRT)whichwas foundedin 1985,supportsworkmainlyin the
departmentsofmedicaloncologyattheWestLondonCancerCentrebasedatCharingCross and
HammersmithHospitals(ImperialCollegeHealthcareNHSTrust)andinthedepartmentof medical
oncologyattheMountVernonCancerCentre,inNorthwood,Middlesex.Thecharityhasbeen controlled
by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charity.

- Trustees
AttheAGMonSept92019,MrRobinEllisonannouncedhisplanforretirementfromactiverolesin the
CTRT.ProfessorGordonRustinalsoannouncedhisplantostepdownasChairofTrustees.Theyare both
welcomedasHonorarytrustees.ItwasproposedattheAGMinJune2020,thattheroleofChairof the
CTRT will be taken by Professor Marcia Hall, this will be ratified this year.
We have welcomed Mr Russell Hallam, Partner IBB Law, Uxbridge as a new trustee.
The other trusteesremain:Prof GordonRustin, Prof MichaelSeckl, Dr Paul Nathan,Dr Andreas Polychronis,
DrAnandSharmaandDrDavidPinato.WeplantoactivelyseeknewTrusteesduring2021toachieve a
broader range of expertise within the Board.
- Administration
The trusteesare particularlygratefulto LindaSwiftfor administratingthe Trustfor overthe last 15years. A
newCTRTadministrator(part-time)wasappointedinNovember2020,MrsAnnaHoggett.Shewill work
alongsideSharonWilmotfromNavigatorCorporateServices,whowilloverseethebook-keeping aspects
forthecharity.AlreadygreatprogresshasmadetofinalisetheaccountsforDec2020,setupa new
pensionschemeforouremployees(viaNEST)andtoexploretheamalgamationofseveralbank accounts
onto a XERO platform to allow reconciliations into a single bank account.
Atthequarterlytrustees'meetings,thetrusteesagreethebroadstrategyandareasofactivityfor the
Trust,includingconsiderationofinvestment,reservesandriskmanagementandperformance.Theday to
dayadministrationofgrantsandtheprocessingandhandlingofapplicationsisdelegatedtothe Trust
Administrator.
Risk management
TheTrusteesareawareoftherisksaffectingtheTrustanditsworkandhaveensuredthatpoliciesare in
place to mitigate the effect of these risks.
- Financial risks and Investment
TheTrustmaintainssubstantialreservestomeetitsoutstandinglong-termcommitments.The investment
andmanagementofthosereservesareconsideredateachBoardmeeting;giventhenatureof the
obligations,thedecisionhasbeentakentostayincash,despitetherisksofinflationandthe prevailing
minimal interest rates.
- Governance structure
Thereviewofgovernancestructure,policiesandprocedureswascommencedandfollowingthat review,
any recommendations made and agreed upon by the trustees will be implemented in the authorised order.

with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I reportin respectofmyexaminationoftheTrust'saccountscarriedoutundersection145oftheAct and
incarryingoutmyexaminationIhavefollowedallapplicableDirectionsgivenbytheCharity Commission
under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Ihavecompletedmyexamination.Iconfirmthatnomaterialmattershavecometomyattention in

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparing the financial statements
Thefinancialstatementsofthecharity,whichisapublicbenefitentityunderFRS102,have been
preparedinaccordancewiththeCharitiesSORP(FRS102)'AccountingandReportingby Charities:
StatementofRecommendedPracticeapplicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsin accordance
withtheFinancialReportingStandardapplicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland(FRS 102)
(effective1January2019)',FinancialReportingStandard102'TheFinancialReporting Standard
applicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland'andtheCharitiesAct2011.Thefinancial statements
havebeenpreparedunderthehistoricalcostconvention,withtheexceptionofinvestments which
are included at market value.
Financial reporting standard 102 - reduced disclosure exemptions
Thecharityhastakenadvantageofthefollowingdisclosureexemptionsin preparingthese financial
statements,aspermittedbyFRS102'TheFinancialReportingStandardapplicableintheUK and
Republic of Ireland':
the requirements of Section 7 Statement of Cash Flows.
Income
Allincomeis recognisedin theStatementofFinancialActivitiesoncethecharityhasentitlement to
the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilitiesarerecognisedasexpenditureassoonasthereisalegalorconstructive obligation
committingthe charityto that expenditure,it is probablethat a transferof economicbenefitswill be
requiredinsettlementandtheamountoftheobligationcanbemeasuredreliably.Expenditure is
accountedforonanaccrualsbasisandhasbeenclassifiedunderheadingsthataggregateall cost
relatedtothecategory.Wherecostscannotbedirectlyattributedtoparticularheadingsthey have
been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Tangible fixed assets
Depreciationisprovidedatthefollowingannualratesinordertowriteoffeachassetover its
estimated useful life.
Computer equipment- 25% on reducing balance
Taxation
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestrictedfundscanbe usedin accordancewiththecharitableobjectivesat thediscretionof the
trustees.
