In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings. The focus of our activities continues to be the provision of Scouting for boys and girls from 6 years to 14 years (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts). Activities are run in accordance with The Scout Association policies and guidance to engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Explorers

The unit has enjoyed regular attendance from its members of which there have been 20 in the year. The leaders encourage members to take it in turns to plan and run the evenings themselves, to support their personal development. Activities this year include a trip to the Czech Republic, joining in the Scouting Association’s annual Monopoly game in London (where the group came 11[th] ), supporting the Green Beret competition, camping at Thriftwood and hiking.

Scouts

The troop has welcomed around 30 Scouts in the period. There have been 4 Scout camps including a 7[th] Royston group camp in Spring at Thriftwood, a weeklong summer camp to Bristol (including caving, rock climbing, sailing, kayaking, power boating and hiking!), the Green Beret at Pacar and finishing with the Norfolk coast expedition - a 26k hike and overnight stay in chilly March. Some of the other highlights included hiking, cooking and conservation work.

Cubs

The pack has 32 Cubs, with more on the waiting list. Activities have included camps with multiple activities (including canoeing, campfire cooking and archery), night hikes, first aid, learning to tie knots and build campfires plus a visit to the local RSPB Centre.

A number of cubs will be moving up in soon and are working hard to complete their Silver Awards before they go.

Beavers

The colony has 26 Beavers, with an ever-growing waiting list. We have a strong leadership team who are helped by some of our Young Leaders.

Highlights from the year include:

Fundraising

Fundraising to purchase equipment and top up member subscriptions has continued but the main focus of the fundraising effort continues to be on activity to raise the money required to replace the Scout Hut.

The group has raised another £2,590 in the financial year for this purpose, taking the Scout Hut fund to £26,355 at year end. The Trustees had expected to obtain planning permission for the new hut design in 2024 but negotiations with the village Parish Council who own the land the hut sits on have taken longer than planned. Agreement has now been reached and we are hopeful planning permission will be obtained this year, after which time fundraising efforts will be ramped up.
