The society was formed in 1946 to promote, maintain, improve and advance the education of the public by the encouragement of the study and practice of the fine and applied arts, with particular reference to the sea and maritime subjects.

Objects: To Promote, Maintain, Improve And Advance The Education Of The Public By The Encouragement Of The Study And Practice Of The Fine And Applied Arts With Particular But Not Exclusive Reference To The Sea, To The Seashore And To Marine And Maritime Subjects Of Whatsoever Nature And By The Recognition Of Such Works Of Art As An Essential Feature Of The Artistic Of A Maritime Nation.
