We thought that the Covid period was challenging but this last year at Nemca has been one of the most difficult years in the 41 years we’ve been here.
In December we had to close Jollytime Playgroup – a group that had been at the centre from the time we opened in 1982. The birth rate nationally has dropped and not likely to pick up until 2030. The schools offered 30 hours nursery care and this had a big impact on small playgroups and nurseries like ours. By October, we only had seven children on the register in a 24 place playgroup. It was clear, financially, we couldn’t continue. Sadly we had recruited a new member of staff, not realising what was coming our way. Merton were very supportive during this period and assisted us financially but it was making longstanding staff redundant that was the most painful experience. A massive thank you to Sharon Georgiou and Nita Cochrane for their long service of loyalty, love and commitment to the children and families they supported at the playgroup. Both, we are pleased to say, found new jobs immediately and are happy in their new roles. Also a big thank you to Ellen Quinn whose stay with us was short but whose company and commitment we all appreciated.
About this time, Shirley Stratton, longstanding playgroup worker, who had been battling with Cancer for a number of years, sadly died. This truly added to the sadness everyone was feeling at that time. Shirley was much loved by all at the centre and dearly missed by those who worked closely with her.
It wasn’t long after that Tina Humphries decided that she would leave. Losing the playgroup and a good friend was extremely difficult for her. I am pleased to report that she and Obi (her dog) have moved to the south of England and is enjoying her new job. Tina was with us for 20 years and has been a superb centre manager and a great friend to all of us. We wish he well for the future.
We welcome Emily Williams to the role of Centre Manager who is making her mark and bringing in lots of fresh ideas to keep Nemca connected to our local community.
We lost three groups this year – Irish Dancing, Join in and Jiggle and Mencap, all of whom are welcome to return in the future if their circumstances change. Thanks to all of them for their involvement. We also welcomed new groups, Zumba Gold, Chair based exercise, a re-vamped Coffee and Crayons, moved from the annexe to the main building.
Financially, we are on solid ground. We are grateful to Merton for our main grant and to Merton’s Civic Pride fund, the Co-op, Squire Sander, solicitors and my son, Lee, who cycled the equivalent of a round the world journey on a standing bike to raise over £3,000 for us. Our fundraising events: Quiz Night, the Summer Fair, Christmas Bazaar were successful and well attended. Thanks to everyone who came along for the fun and to support us.
We delivered 4,000 newsletters to every household in the ward June and January to keep local residents in touch with what’s going on and are our events are promoted regularly on our social media channels and in the local Councillors weekly Graveney Newsround.
A special thank you our staff, tutors, management team and Friends of Nemca for their continuous support and helping to keep Nemca a vibrant hub in our local community.
Linda Kirby Chair
JOLLYTIME PLAYGROUP SADLY CLOSED DEC 22.
When Nemca started in 1982, Jollytime Playground took over the Monday to Friday morning slot and was with the centre for 36 years.
In December, sadly, Jollytime had to close. The birth rate had
fallen during the Covid period and by October 2022 only 7 children were registered in a 24 place playgroup that normally had a waiting list.
Local schools were also affected and will continue to see lower numbers until 2030.
Our massive thanks to all past playgroup staff who supported this lovely playgroup over the years and all the parents and children who enjoyed being with us. A special thank you to Sharon, Nita and Ellen, who sadly, we had to make redundant. Best wishes to them in their new roles.
COFFEE AND CRAYONS
9.30 – 12 on Mondays Emily Williams
Coffee and Crayons has continued to be a success. Numbers attending have doubled. It is a great hub for parents and toddlers to come together and have a safe space for their children to learn, play and explore as well as learn great social skills with children of their age.
Diversity of members using this club has increased to reflect the diverse communities surrounding Nemca.
We continue to provide a healthy snack and stories and songs and as an addition this year are inviting wellbeing speakers and storytellers to join and create an even more welcoming and engaging environment.
YOUNG AT HEART
LUNCH AND ACTIVITIES CLUB Chris Gray
Lunch Monday 1pm - 2 Activities Club 2 – 4
This is a well-loved and well attended group which has a lunch club and also a social club. Every week this keeps providing a safe, friendly and social environment for our seniors to come and meet and have a freshly cooked meal. It gives members a chance to gather, have a chat, catch-up and feel connected. We have acquired new equipment such as Boccia and Soca based on feedback from the group to enable there to be a range of movement and games activities attached to this group going forward. There will also be speakers coming in monthly to do wellbeing workshops in a partnership with Merton Uplift. Newcomers always welcome.
FISH AND CHIPS LUNCH CLUB
Thursday 1-2pm Emily Williams
Fish and chips group meets weekly and for the first time continued over August in order to help reduce isolation in our community and to provide a subsidised, freshly cooked meal for our older members.
It has become an inclusive group that also supports neurodiverse members of our community. One of its members said, 'My support worker said I need this group and I think it is amazing and I don't know where I'd be without it'. This group also supports the community indirectly as the volunteers are from neurodiverse areas in the community so acts as a social setting in which they can . increase and practice vital social skills in a safe space
COUNTRY ROADS - RAH RAH THEATRE
NEMCA organised a free wellbeing and social engagement event with actors and dancers coming from the Rah Rah theatre to perform an interactive show with singing and dancing. Everyone was up on their feet getting active and joining in. It was attended by more than 30 people and a hit with our local community.
YOUTH CLUB
Friday 7- 9pm Drop-in £2 entrance. . 11-19 yrs welcome Michael Kerridge
NEMCA’s Youth Club runs “Term Time.” Each session costs £2 per young person. If an existing attendee introduces a friend they both get in free for the 1[st] session. Youth Club is a staple for our young community here at NEMCA. We have children ranging from 11-18 that come regularly every Friday 7-9pm to connect, chill-out and engage with other kids and activities that help with social integration and mobility. Youth club had a wonderful outing at Christmas to see a pantomime and over the year have had a range of activities
including woodwork, music evenings, Meccano making events, learning rugby and football skills and other things.
Kai who was a member of youth club many years ago came back to visit as he is now a successful youth leader at WIMBLEDON AFC. So will now become a mentor as well and will visit soon to mentor some of the children who attend.
We are revamping our Youth Club and have a plan of action for child-led activities based on feedback from our young members in the coming months including a mocktail evening, guest celebrity speakers, drumming workshops and a trip to the theatre.
SUMMER CAMPS
NEMCA hosted a series of summer camps aimed at children with Free School Meals to help with team building, social connectedness and a range of levelling-up skills over the summer which were very successful. As a follow-on we are working jointly with Wimbledon AFC who have provided other resources to us such as instructors to our Young At Heart group to facilitate healthy living and other joint partnerships such as arranging inspirational speakers for our Youth Club.
MAINTENANCE
Our annexe building has come to the end of its life and we are working with the council to look at how it can be replaced.
We have been facilitating a range of upgrades to our main hall and men's lavatories. Also to update the compliance and accessibility elements in the disabled loo.
We are also due to be working with the Prince's Trust,'Justice' and Workshop 305 to continue upgrades to our buildings, gardens and grounds.
CHILDREN’S FREESTYLE DANCE CLASS
Tuesdays 5.30-6.30 5-9 year olds 6.30-7 10yrs plus
The dance classes have continued going well and the number of pupils attending has remained high in both classes. In February some of our dancers took part in Merton Live at Wimbledon Theatre. This was a wonderful opportunity to perform on a professional stage and all the dancers really enjoyed taking part. In July we entered the dance pupils for their dance exams and we are very proud that they all achieved the highest pass mark – Highly Commended.
Freestyle dance encompasses many different dance styles (modern, jazz, street, disco etc). New pupils are always welcome
Joy & Louisa Robinson (M.N.A.T.D.)
IRISH DANCING
The Foley Rose School of Irish Dancing ran every Monday 17.15 – 20.30 and Wednesday 17.00 – 19.00.
This class ran until the summer term of 2023.
It was available for girls and boys aged 3+ and was a great way to meet new friends, get fit, build confidence and most of all have fun!
Sorry this club is no longer operating at Nemca.
HOMESTART MERTON
Home-Start Merton’s Happy Steps group runs every Wednesday during term time, providing a safe environment for parents and their little ones from pregnancy up to 5 years old. The group environment encourages socialisation, peer support, activities, and offers a lunch for both parents and their little ones. The group started up in March 2023 and in the past 6 months, up to 12 mums and 14 children have benefited from attending each week. One mum claimed ‘I haven’t felt so at home around people in such a long time. Lovely ladies and lovely babies as well.’ Another mum has said that the help the group gives is invaluable; ‘having someone to listen, care and look after me when I’m always the one caring for others makes me feel a little bit less lonely’. One first time mum, who wasn’t sure whether she was doing right or wrong, has said that the group has helped her develop as a mum and she has enjoyed attending all group sessions. The hall space and resources that NEMCA provides is invaluable to what we at Home-Start can offer our families, so thank you.
YOGA
Wednesday 2-3 Gentle Yoga Friday 10.30 – Experienced students 11.30 Saturday all welcome Annie Rossi
As a community centre, well-being is at the heart of what we aim to do for our local community . Yoga has a central place at NEMCA. Yoga is at the centre 3 times a week over the year and provides a place for people of all ages and abilities to be calm, centred and connect with other like- minded people and be healthy. Annie has been teaching yoga classes at NEMCA since September 2021.
Annie says “Some of these students have health issues and it is good we can use the NEMCA chairs and I can store other yoga equipment in the cupboard. A few of the students are in their 80's and they all say they enjoy the classes and it has been beneficial for them. Students appreciate the on-site car parking and being able to do yoga in their local community”.
ZUMBA GOLD
12.30 FRIDAY JODIE HAY
Our regular, weekly Friday Zumba Gold has been a hit and it involves a fun, upbeat fitness dance class to the beat of music and with disco lights. It is run by a very experienced and friendly instructor Jodie Hay who brings her own flair to the class. People can drop-in or pre- book. It has a diverse membership attending, including couples. It helps with keeping our community active and provides an energy boost on a Friday just before the weekend begins.
CIVIC PRIDE AWARD TO OUR WONDERFUL CHRIS GRAY
One of our longstanding and loyal volunteers was invited to meet the Mayor to receive a Civic Pride Award for her wonderful work with our NEMCA community . A much deserved recognition of her work, not only with our seniors but also at our fundraising events and for her long-standing work helping with our lunch groups and senior social club.
COMMUNITY PLANTING DAY
This was a success. Merton Garden Streets and other charities donated circa £600 of plants, assisted by a group of volunteers from the community. The garden and grounds had a revamp and now include a new bug hotel and a vegetable patch. We have already harvested our first tomatoes.
INDIAN SINGING GROUP – Saturday 3-5pm Mr Rahman
The Indian singing group continues on a weekly basis and has had a number of community performances with guest musicians flying in from India and playing a range of culturally significant instruments and sharing their expertise and music with the community.
HALL HIRE
Hall hire has tripled in frequency in the last few months, enabling more children’s parties and members of the community to use the space. It helps with revenue for the Centre for overheads and upgrades in IT and other administrative updates such as the website and internal GDPR systems.
