St Nicolas Preschool has been based in the grounds of St Nicolas
Primary School for over thirty fve years. Our objectives have
always been to put the children frst whilst ofering a happy, safe
environment for children to start their journey into primary
education. With the strengths of our qualifed, experienced staf.
Parents and families we endeavour to ofer a caring setting that
promotes learning. Surveys are sent out yearly to ensure we
continue to ofer the best start for our children. We ofer a
nurturing, encouraging environment so all families and children
can develop into confdent learners. We use the guidance from
the Early Years Foundation Stage documentation 2017 to provide
the community with a thriving non-proft making setting. The
community are welcomed to share and develop family life within
our group. We work with outside agencies to ofer all children
the best start in life, welcoming children with English as an
additional language and special educational needs, to help them
reach their best potential. We take safeguarding very seriously
and are involved in supporting families in Abingdon with
additional needs.
September 2020 the doors opened to a new cohort amidst a
global pandemic. Preschool numbers were low compared to
previous years. This was potentially a mix of the pandemic and a
low birth year, which we later discovered when the Primary
School opened for admissions in November 2020.
We are very much part of the community, and maintain close
links with St Nicolas Primary school, and outside agencies such
as speech and language therapists and SENco’s so that we are
all very much involved in our children’s future.
Our Trustees have due regard to the guidance on public beneft
issued by the Charity Commission when making decisions of the
future changes.

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

This was an unprecedented year. The staff had to work in very difficult circumstances to flex and adapt to the ever changing rules and guidance issued during the pandemic.

OSTED visited in June 2021 and awarded a GOOD report. The last report was Requires Improvement so this is a fantastic achievement by the staff. The report was very complementary and only minor recommendations were recorded.

Usual fundraising efforts were not possible this year so the committee reached out to parents to ask for donations of equipment or cash. This was received very well by parents and enabled a lot of resources to come into the preschool. This is something I would recommend continuing.

In the summer of 2021 the preschool underwent significant renovations to the outside area. The outside space was becoming unsafe for children and certain areas were no longer accessible due to the Health and Safety concerns. The preschool had some funds but were £4000 short. The Treasure and Chair consulted the committee and agreed that funds from the reserve account would be used and replaced over a 2 year period. We weighed up the risk and decided that the risk of closure was minimal where the risk of injury was high.

As referenced in previous reports the struggle to get an active committee continues and fewer parents or carers are volunteering their time. This is a trend being seen across most parent volunteer platforms.

We continue to embrace our partnership with the attached school, sharing and developing plans for the future, monitoring individual learning areas and working together to make the transition into school a rewarding and happy experience.

Integration days for the children going in to St Nicolas Primary School were not possible so the preschool staff worked with the reception team to allow the children to meet the staff over the fence.
