REVIEW OF PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Firstly, I would like to thank all those who have given their time, their experience, skills and commitment to the work of the Society and the Theatre. I do not intend to mention individuals by name but to thank you all collectively. We have also managed to attract some more volunteers who are willing to help and lend their support. This is so vital in contributing to our continued success and future.

The highlight of the year grand was possibly the 90[th] Birthday celebrations, of the inaugural play back in 1932, which, after a few postponements, actually happened in October. We were blessed with sunny weather and attracted many people to this event which included the unveiling of The Eileen Pollard memorial, with many of Eileen's family there to see. What an array of steam engines too, many of them so very rare.

Throughout the year we have continued to carry out much work in, around and outside our venue, which we own. Lots of photos of previous performances, older and more recent too. We have kept much archive material which shows our history and heritage.

Lane Theatre is always undergoing refreshment and uplift in our appearance. Volunteers have contributed much of their time and skills to achieve this and in applying and achieving grants which have been awarded.

We continue to attract high quality tribute acts, drag acts, The Quarry Gospel Church, plays by external groups and other performing arts including performances by Newquay Stage Company.

We are certainly regarded as a community asset, with volunteers focused and committed in our roles within the committee.

A great team looking forward to what 2023 brings.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINERS' REPORT

Independent Examiners' report to the trustees on the unaudited financial statements of Newquay Dramatic Society

We report on the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31st October 2022, which are set out on pages 4 to 7.

Respective responsibilities of the trustees and examiner

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements; you consider that the audit requirement of section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act) does not apply. It is our responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 43(7) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to our attention.

Basis of Independent Examiner’s report

Our examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently we do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the financial statements.

Independent Examiner’s Statement

In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements

 to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met; or to which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.

PRESIDENT’S REMARKS

for the year ended 31st October 2022

Earlier this year we unveiled a plaque honouring the late Eileen Pollard who was instrumental in acquiring the old Lane Village Hall as an ideal venue for a proposed new home for Newquay Amateur Dramatic Society. Various sites around the town were considered but the availability of on-site parking facilities has proven to be of immense value to the long-term success of the charity.

I worked with Eileen on many productions and, as time went by, it became increasingly clear that the public’s appetite for plays was declining. The finances of the Society were, at times, under severe pressure. It was only when our good friend John Jay suggested that we attempt to attract outside hirings that our fortunes began to change. This foresight proved to be a turning point and the theatre has since gone from strength to strength as proven by very positive financial results.

Lane Theatre is now a well-known and respected local community resource thanks to a willingness to embrace change. We are frequently fully booked for our incoming acts which not only generate considerable revenue but draw in new audiences to the theatre. How many times do we hear ‘where are the toilets?’ from our firsttime visitors.

Our success is due, in large part, to a small but willing band of volunteers who give freely of their time to welcome our audiences. You know who you are and I am very grateful to you all for your ongoing commitment. Ann Masters would always welcome more members giving up just a few hours now and then to support YOUR theatre.

There is one hard-working person who should receive special mention, namely, Paul Sim. Paul beavers away tirelessly behind the scenes dealing with bookings, looking after the (very profitable) bar and acting as secretary to the Society. Thank you, Paul.

Newquay Dramatic Society is in a very strong financial position and there are exciting plans to upgrade our facilities. We now have a sound business model and can look forward to a positive future but only with the continued support of the membership.

Roger Allen President.
