Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 1[st] January 2023 Period start date To 31[st] December 2023 Period end date

Charity name: Pod Charitable Trust

Charity registration number: 279743

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 Such charitable purpose or charitable
purposes as the trustees may in their
absolute discretion from time to time
think fit (March 1980)
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Pod aims to bring magic, fun and
laughter into the lives of children and
young people in hospital. For the last 45
years Pod entertainers have made the
hospital journey a more pleasant one for
around a million children and one
remembered (at least partly) with a
smile.
Pod has 3 objectives: to make smiles
and laughter, to distract children and
young people from pain and worry and
to improve children’s and young
people’s attitudes to hospitalization,
helping them to cope better with the
possibility of re-admittance and further
treatment.
Pod is governed by a board of voluntary
trustees. All administrative costs are
financed by an entirely separate charity
– The Pod League of Friends (Reg:
296119). Entertainer’s fees are Pod’s
only cost which means every penny
donated is spent on cheering up
children in hospital.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 We confirm that trustees have had
regard to the Charity Commission’s
Guidance on Public Benefit.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Pod visits provide an opportunity for
children, young people and their
families to forget their worries, relax and
share in a positive activity in which they
have fun together. Pod entertainers
provide regular monthly visits at
hospitals and hospices throughout the
UK, providing shows on wards, in
playrooms and clinics. They visit
children individually at the bedside and
children who are in isolation so that
everyone is included and has something
to smile about.
In 2019 Pod provided 2816 sessions in
127 hospitals and hospices but in March
2020, Covid meant that all visits were
suspended. Since then, visits have very
gradually resumed at some of the
hospitals and hospices previously
visited. By the end of 2023 there are
1475 sessions at 63 hospitals and
hospices.

Para 1.21 Cash at bank: £298,113.00
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 Policy has been to maintain reserves
sufficient to cover expenditure for 18
months. Covid restrictions since March
2020 meant most visits could not take
place, consequently income has been
received over the last few years but has
not yet been spent. As visits resume at
more hospitals, all donations received
will be used for the purposes for which
they were intended.
Reserve funds are based upon 165
sessions per month in 65 hospitals.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 £148,500
