GREAT HOUGHTON PLAYING FIELD ASSOCIATION CHARITY REGISTRATION NUMBER: 272060
Annual General Meeting : 29[th] April 2025 - Chairman’s Report
Introduction
I would like to welcome everyone to the 2025 AGM of Great Houghton Playing Field Association (GHPFA) and would point out that this AGM covers the activities of the GHPFA for the 2024 calendar year (our financial year).
At the May 2024 Committee Meeting, Angus Buglass was elected Chairman and Bill Hart was elected both Secretary and Treasurer. I would like to thank Terry Burnham (our previous Treasurer for many years) for all her help during 2024 in helping us sort out the necessary transfers of our banking facilities with both Lloyds Bank and the Skipton Building Society.
Committee Changes
After all the committee changes we experienced in 2023, I’m pleased to say that we have not had any changes during 2024 and it has been a pleasure to work with everybody in such a positive manner all year.
Playing Field
The GHPFA is responsible for the maintenance/cutting of the playing field itself. I would like to thank GHCC in particular, for all the help they give me in carrying out this work.
Discussions continued throughout 2024 between the GHPFA and the AWA concerning major work to be carried out by AWA in the Village Hall Car Park. As you know, the work began and was then stopped by the AWA, causing considerable inconvenience to all our users. The work was eventually carried out in January 2025 and will be reported separately at this AGM.
The Tennis Court is managed and maintained by the GHPFA and is a thriving part of the Playing Field landscape – this is very much down to Nicky’s efforts and I would like to thank her for all the work she puts in to ensuring the success of the Tennis Club. During 2024 we made the decision to cut down all of the leylandii at the Leys Lane side of the tennis court as this was beginning to have a detrimental affect on using the court.
Children’s Play Area
In June 2024, the annual RoSPA approved inspection of the Children’s Play Area took place and only minor actions were required – this was not unexpected after spending well over £8k on the play area in 2023.
Village Hall
We continue to have a contract with Forrest Commercial Cleaning Ltd to provide cleaning services to the village hall – cleaning is usually carried out once a week on Mondays.
The village hall is the Polling Station for Great Houghton and during 2024 there were two election days (PFCC Election and General Election). On these days the hall is unable to be used for any other purpose, but on the plus side we received £650.00 hire charge for each election day.
A number of key events were organised by the GHPFA during 2024. These included the return of Mikron Theatre in June, a Halloween Event at the village hall for youngsters, the annual Bonfire Night celebrations and in December, for the first time, we held a Christmas Panto (Beauty and the Beast). All of these were incredibly successful and I would like to thank the very large number of people involved in making these events happen, especially the GHPFA Trustees and all the willing volunteers from our many user groups.
We were delighted that Northamptonshire Police used the village hall as a training centre throughout 2024 and we hope will continue to use our facilities in the future.
User Groups
We are committed to providing the maximum support we can to all of our user groups, many of which are represented on the GHPFA Committee and play a key role in the management and operation of the village hall and playing field. We did not increase hire charges in 2024 for either our regular users or for any one-off hirer of the facilities and we know that this was much appreciated. Hire charges will be reviewed at the first meeting of the new GHPFA Committee in May 2025 and we would hope to keep any increases to a minimum or possibly none at all.
GHPFA Finances
Our Treasurer, Bill Hart, will present the 2024 figures to the AGM – our total income was £44,132.00 with total expenditure at £35,318.00 leaving a surplus for the year of £8,814.00 – I would like to thank Bill for his help in putting together the 2024 figures and for liaising with our auditor, Frank Brett, who has once again done a fantastic job in producing his independent report on accounts that has to be submitted to the Charity Commission.
These figures show a significant turnaround from 2023, where the amended results showed a deficit of £9,343.00 and are even more impressive when one considers that the GHPFA Committee made a decision not to increase hire charges in 2024 – indeed, some hire charges were reduced.
Management and Operation of the Bar
I would like to emphasise to all villagers and anyone else hiring our facilities, that the Village Hall are licensed premises and we are bound by all relevant licensing legislation.
In addition, the GHPFA General Committee and Bar Committee are liable for the proper management and operation of the bar and I would particularly like to thank my support team for the work they do in helping me operate the bar.
Village Hall Development Strategy
The reconfiguration of the village hall has been placed on hold as we review both the feasibility and desirability of the redevelopment project with the Great Houghton Parish Council (the owners of the building).
Conclusion
I would like to thank everyone on the GHPFA Committee for all their hard work and support during 2024. It has been a year of consolidation and we remain in a very strong position, however, we know that we need to attract more volunteers from the village, with new ideas, who can help us to continue to thrive in the coming years.
