General Secretary's Annual Report 2020 on behalf of the Executive Council

The DBKA President, Chris Smith welcomed everyone to the 2019 Devon Beekeepers’ Day (DBD) and mentioned that it was an opportunity to recognise the significant achievements of members throughout the previous year. DBKA was the oldest beekeeping association in the world, and this would be the 144[th] (formerly President’s) Day, and the 3[rd] DBD. He thanked the 5 Branches there for the quality of their exhibits, and also thanked the NBU, St Johns Nurseries, the AHAT Team, and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust for their stands. He welcomed the speakers and briefly mentioned the order of the day. The proceeds from the raffle were shared between DBKA General Funds and the President’s Fund. The President’s Fund had recently made a donation of £500 to Bees for Development. The donation would be subject to matched funding through the Big Give Programme.

EC Meetings - there had been 5 EC meetings in 2020; one at Betty Cottles Inn, Okehampton and, as a result of the pandemic, 4 virtual meetings conducted on Zoom

DBKA Governing Document - a minor amendment to the Document had been made.

eR2 - the BBKA eR2 system had continued to see improvements and additional functions during the year. The introduction of on-line membership had seemed to go well.

Asian Hornet (AH) - the AH continued to maintain a high profile. Although very few reports this year across the country of AH sightings, our AH Action Teams continue to develop their preparedness and are working with neighbouring Associations to ensure a consistent approach across the South West. The EPICollect database was now being used for AH work.

Devon Beekeepers’ Day (DBD)/AGM - due to the pandemic it has not been possible to have a DBD in 2020. An on-line AGM followed by a lecture from Lynne Ingram, Somerset Beekeepers, would be held instead.

National Honey Show (NHS) - the NHS was cancelled this year and replaced by a short on-line event. We are represented on the NHS Council by Chris Utting and Jack Mummery.

BeeCraft Magazine - we are the holder of 84 shares in this magazine and the 3 required trustees had been appointed by the EC as shareholders - Alan Binge, Tony Lindsell, and Viv Thorn.

Training & Educational - the Education Sub-Committee has produced a pan-Devon on-Line Beginners Course which will start in January 2021.

Devon County Show (DCS) - the DCS was cancelled this year due to the pandemic, but DBKA held a virtual Honey Show which proved to be a great success. This may become an additional feature in future years.

South-West Beekeepers’ Forum (SWBKF) - three meetings had been held during the year; one in Somerset, and 2 on-line. Chairmanship of the forum has been handed to Devon for the next 3 years, and this will be shared by Tony Lindsell, our President, and Chris Smith, our immediate past-President. Branches - Branches had responded very well to the restrictions on activity imposed by the pandemic. Committee meetings and Branch events had been held on Zoom. As we go into the winter most Branches will be offering on-line winter programmes and forums.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Devon Beekeeper Association

I report on the accounts of the Association for the year ended 30[th] September 2020,
which are set out on pages 2 to 8.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts;
you consider that the audit requirement of section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993
(the Act) does not apply.  It is my responsibility to state, based on procedures
specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under
section 43 (7) (b) of the Act, whether matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by
the Charity Commissioners.  An examination includes a review of the accounting
records kept by the charity and a comparison of accounts presented with those
records.  It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the
accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters.
The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in
an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by
the accounts.
