Chairman’s Report 2021/22
Its been another challenging year where we have faced different challenges to the previous one. Covid has settled down and as a club we have been able to resume a more normal way of operating. Our swimmers have been able to enjoy a more consistent training period and our volunteers and workforce have resumed a less stringent way of working. The future of pools across the country have been in question with the enormous hike in heating prices, something we are likely to see and feel over the coming year. Out pool provider has continued to be supportive, and our relationships have grown, with more swimmers being recommended from them to join the club and our sessions. Each discipline across the club as we know it now has grown and seen new members join.
A highlight of my year was the Jubilee cup where all sections of the club came together for a fun gala. Organized and led by Tracy it was a fun, exciting and a fast paced night that was inclusive of every member of our swimming community. Volunteers from masters and other areas came together to ensure that everyone had a great, fun night to remember, and I look forward to a repeat next year!!
The exec team surrounding me have been amazing, they have questioned and challenged when needed and supported and encouraged more than I could ever ask! We have had a great workforce that have all pulled together, the coaches on the ground, the volunteers, and the parents. Our workforce has grown both those that you see poolside and also those behind the scenes who without we would not be able to function so thank you to everyone!
One of the biggest challenges we have faced this year continue to be our finances, income has been more stable and has started to grow but our costs have mirrored this. Going forward a need to hold more fundraising events, increase our income from our own galas and make all sessions cost effective.
So what have we been up to?
-
Competitive Squad : An exciting year with many competitions at all levels with lots of new swimmers experiencing galas and competition for the first time. Whilst our more experienced swimmers have continued to grow and achieve some fantastic results. We have had swimmers represent the club at Kents, Regionals and Nationals. At East Invicta we fielded a team in all events with some amazing performances. We turn now to look at Kent Champ’s 2023, with an increased number looking to currently have consideration and automatic times across all ages.
-
Learn To Race : Led and trained by Tracy Anstis and her support team Learn to Race section has grown immensely again in numbers and strength, finishing again this this year at full capacity and trials and queries still coming in! The growth and nurturing of this section has been through amazing dedication and team work by Tracy and her team who have spent untold amount of hours developing these sections.
-
Masters : Has grown in strength and numbers, sessions were reviewed, and additional hours added. As with our competitive squad we have had representation at Kents, regionals and Nationals, with a winner in age group at Nationals! The growth will continue into 2023 encouraging Junior to transfer across to masters and continue the skills they have gained.
-
Membership : Our membership has increased throughout the year across all sections of the club.
-
Media: We continue to see extended coverage in our local press and social media from all disciplines, this is really helping to promote and celebrate the great work and team we have as a club.
-
Executive Committee/Trustees : I would like to thank the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees for their support and guidance over the past year, we are all volunteers from different walks of life and the commitment and time spent on work for the club does not go unnoticed, you have made what has been a challenging year a successful one that we can celebrate!
In Summary….
I am sad to say that I will be stepping down as chairwomen after two years, it has been an amazing experience supporting in this role, however as with all volunteers we have paid jobs and challenges away from the pool and I just don’t have as much time to dedicate to the role as I would like. I will continue to be involved and support wherever I can and will watch the swimmers grow with the same pride that I do now!! I, as I said last year am so proud of what we achieve and there has been more than one occasion when I have become overwhelmed by the smile and delight on a swimmer’s face as they have achieved something! Swimming is not an easy sport for either the swimmers, supporters, coaches or any one involved and we may not always get it right, but we are a team!
Reflecting on the last year, it’s been a challenge, I have had ups and downs as the Chair. There have been some hard decisions to make and some uncomfortable moments as we have had to do the right thing for the club and all swimmers, but I would do it a thousand times over!
Thank you all for your support!

Presidents Report 2022
It has been a privilege to serve Dover Life Guard Club for another year. I have been a member of this fantastic club since I was 2 years old and have seen many changes throughout the years. DLGC is run by a fantastic group of volunteers, without whom the smooth running of this successful club would not happen. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their time and efforts to make the club what it is.
As the club continues to return to strength and back to normal after a strange few years, we have had to continually adapt to new ways of doing things. We are continue to grow in numbers from our Learn to Race through our squads and into our Masters. There is a wealth of knowledge and expertise throughout the club and many new faces are volunteering in many roles, without which the club and galas would not be able function. As the swimming world continues to reopen, more chances for galas have been had and the club has enjoyed many successes along the way, from development galas to National championships and team events to in-house fun galas such as the Jubilee Cup that involved all sections of the club.
It is great to see so many swimmers enjoying their sport and learning great life skills along the way. We were fortunate enough to run the Boxing Day Dip again in December 2021 and it was great to see so many participants back throwing themselves into the cold water! I would like to thank all those that volunteered and gave up their time on Boxing Day to help run the dip, from the volunteers on the signing in table and giving out the well deserved badges, to the lifeguards that ensure everyones safety. Also to all those in the run up that made sure the volunteers and necessary paperwork was in place so that the dip could go ahead. Thank you all. Swimming is such an important life skill to learn and you are never too old to learn to swim. We are lucky to be a part of a fantastic swimming club, with so much history behind it, which is successful in many areas not just competitive swimming, we have a wealth of knowledge within the club to support all our members. Finally, I look forward to the coming year and all the exciting prospects that it will bring to the club, I’m sure we will continue to thrive and support all our members from the very young to the young at heart with their goals and dreams for the future.

Competition Report 2022
This is my fourth year as Competition Secretary and my last year in this role so the time has come to reflect on my role and the last year of competition. I have massively enjoyed the challenge of this role of organising our home open galas, club champs, competition calendar, other open galas, team events and long course training opportunities, I thank you all for your support during this time and wish my successor all the best in continuing to do this role for our swimmers.
Our year started with a successful home competition of Icebreakers which gave many swimmers an opportunity to compete in our home pool and an opportunity to obtain county and regional qualifying times.
We had a large team of swimmers entering Kent County Championships with the distance events being hosted at Dover pool which gave some home pool advantage to our swimmers that they grabbed onto with some fabulous results. We had 18 swimmers qualify and had 8 swimmers getting at least one Kent Medal. We then had 9 of these swimmers qualify for the South East Regionals and special mention to our two finalists Emily-Rose Evans and Ed Williams for outstanding performances.
Club Champs 2022 was a huge success with more swimmers than ever taking part from all facets of the Club and having a go at many races which was great to see. This took place over two weekends and a couple of distance mornings with a great atmosphere poolside and on the balcony supporting the swimmers. It was also lovely to offer the City of Canterbury Swim Club the opportunity to take part and help a smaller Club get some competition. This is always the highlight of my year.
During the Summer we took a mixed ability team to Faversham for the fun outdoor gala. This was so much fun and all the swimmers had a fabulous time. This finished with a burger from the BBQ for all the swimmers and a first place against 5 local swimming teams.
I am super proud that we had Tommy Goldup qualify for Nationals this year. This is a massive achievement and testament to Tommy’s hard work and dedication. During the event Tommy achieved a personal best time 27.59 and only missed out on the final by one place. Well done Tommy!
We are also competing at the National Arena League this year and have done two of the three rounds so far. The team have recently stepped up a league and in the first round they exceeded their ranking of fifth place to finish an impressive third and in the second round they finished fifth. This means that in the last round they are not fighting for relegation but are placed in the middle of the League, this is the best result we have achieved since I can remember.
We have also had three swimmers qualify for the very prestigious Winter Regionals held at Winchester this year - this is one of the hardest competitions to qualify for as it is not age grouped ranked, they just take the fastest swimmers. Our club swimmers were against top tier swimmers and as always they represented the team brilliantly and each achieved at least one personal best time. Well done to Tizzy Dill-Russell, Tommy Goldup and Molly Lown.

The Club are very proud of all the swimmers and I am looking forward to seeing what they can achieve in 2023 following yet another brilliant year of competition. I would like to say farewell to my role and wish all the swimmers every success in 2023.

Learn To Race Report for AGM 2022 – Tracy Anstis
The Learn to Race section has grown exponentially over the last 12 months. It has been an exciting time for the everyone and it’s great to see so many swimmers wishing to join the club. The sessions are spread over 4 nights, but Thursday and Friday evenings are dedicated to our preliminary, intermediate, and advanced sections.
This year has seen a change in support on a Thursday with the loss of volunteer Rebecca Hinton, who had been a constant presence on poolside since September 2020.
Friday night has seen Tracey Bessent handing the baton over to her daughter Jordan Roger-Mill, and who also has now moved on to Loughborough University.
We wish all our past leads and volunteers all the very best and thank them for all the work that have done for the club.
1. Thursday Night
We now have 2 hours, 4 lanes for 7-8pm (26 swimmers) and 1 lane for 8-9pm (9 swimmers) The numbers for trial continue to rise.
The children ages range from 7 to 13 in the earlier session, and 10 – 14 in the later. Al turns up with a smile and ready to go.
The volunteer’s poolside are Lizzie Anstis, Tizzy Dill Russell, and Lewis Head. Laura Kingsland has recently joined us and hoping to become a regular on poolside. Both Tracy and Lizzie have achieved qualifications this year: Tracy as Level 1 coach, and Lizzie Level 1 swim teaching assistant.
2. Friday Night
Two-hour sessions including the preliminary group, who are our pre stage 8 swimmers. Our Junior helpers for Fridays are Katherine Sharp and Freya Sonnen, with Clive supporting. Both Clive and Katherine have recently graduated as level 2 swimming teachers.
The swimmers are progressing well, with their technique and stamina improving. The swimmers are encouraged to participate in development galas, and hopefully next year we will see them more and more in competitions as their confidence grows. The highlight of the year was our Jubilee Cup event. A true celebration of swimming, bringing the club together and having fun.
Two of the Learn to Race graduates were recently crowned East Invicta champions; Jessica Steed (50m Freestyle) Thursday and Evelyn Carson (200m Freestyle) from Fridays. Several of the swimmers took part in the East Invicta relays the 9/10 boys achieving 3[rd ] (Freestyle), 2[nd] Medley, and 9/10 girl’s 2[nd] Medley and 5[th] Freestyle. We are proud of them and whole section who worked hard to support them practising over the last six weeks.
The next twelve months will see us continuing to grow and look to swimmers competing in more events including the Kent Junior League.
We are planning to have in place a volunteer work force pathway. The front desk is now staffed by one of our competitive swimmers, Tom Anstis and we hope to encourage more to volunteer, supporting them with their Duke of Edinburgh or other volunteering goals both on poolside and other key club roles.

Online Membership - Reporting
There is to be an increase of the training fees for 2022 to all disciplines except Masters who have already had a recent training fee increase. This was sent to all members as part of the AGM pack. This is to cover the cost increases in workforce and pool hire cost due to the high rise in fuel costs. Increases equating across the board to approx.10%, starting from 1[st] January 2023 has been decided by the Executive committee. It is hoped that this price increase will provide resilience to the April increases that have been forecast to not burden members with greater increases midyear. The increase is not meant to create a profit and so will be reviewed in 4-6 months’ time, as hopefully costs continue to ease, and the number of members increases.
